Chances are, if you’ve been keeping up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the past couple of years, you may have noticed some discrepancies between the franchise’s films, and the trailers that promote them. Specifically, in the lead-up to a movie’s release, promotional clips and videos featured footage which, it turns out, never made an appearance in the final cut.
In fact, as of late, it seems MCU fans have caught onto this. Back in 2018, when Infinity War was released, the Russo brothers were eventually forced to reveal the studio regularly uses unused footage when it comes to crafting a trailer. The two pulled the same trick with Avengers: Endgame, so much so that multiple outlets listed every discrepancy between the film and its promotional clips.
It might not come as much of a shock that Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts has done the same thing then. Those of you who have already seen the movie’s first trailer (which we’ve embedded above, just in case) might remember a sequence where Peter Parker is preparing for his trip to Europe, which involved getting his passport, picking up toiletries and other amenities, etc.
It turns out, none of that footage made the final cut, but for good reason. As Watts explains, those particular segments have been stitched together to form a new short film titled “Peter’s To-Do List,” which will be included on the Blu-Ray release.
“Yeah, both of those are actually part of the same montage which is ‘Peter’s To-Do List.’ It’s all the things he has to do before he goes on the trip which are going to Delmar’s to get a dual headphone adaptor and one of those European travel plugs, he has to go to a pawn shop to sell his Star Wars toys to get money for the trip, he has to pick up his passport, and he has to take down this giant crime syndicate. That’s just the to-do list for someone like him but that will be its own little short film that we’re going to put on the Blu-ray. There are some good deleted scenes.”
If you’re wondering why the creative team opted to cut this from the theatrical release, it seems that they wanted to hurry things along and get Peter and his classmates to Europe as quickly as possible. This makes sense, but personally, I’d love to see Spider-Man: Far From Home fill in the backstory leading up to the showdown with Mysterio. I won’t hold my breath, but considering the world is still reeling from the undoing of Thanos’ destructive snap, there are so many logistical questions that need to be addressed.
