John Cusack Reportedly Attacked By Cops At Chicago Protest

In a video posted on Twitter late last night, actor John Cusack can be seen getting harassed and even attacked by police officers simply for watching and filming the ongoing civil unrest in Chicago. Cusack is one of several celebrities who’ve participated in the nationwide protests that began earlier this week in response to the death of Floyd George, and the institutionalized racism which caused it.

According to various news sources, the Illinois-born actor was cycling around the city of Chicago in an effort to document the protests and share them with his followers on social media. In the video, Cusack can be seen recording a burning car when an unidentified voice repeatedly tells him to vacate the area. As he leaves, the sound of metal hitting metal can be heard off-screen, which is apparently the sound of cops hitting his bike with their batons, an event which the actor confirms happened in the caption that accompanied the video.

Meanwhile, in another tweet, Cusack also said that he saw authorities use tear gas and pepper spray to break up protesters, sights which led him to conclude the protests weren’t likely to end within a matter of days.

As mentioned before, John Cusack isn’t the only celebrity to partake in the protests, which have spread to Los Angeles, New York City, Nashville, Atlanta, and numerous other cities throughout the country. Ariana Grande, for instance, was seen joining protesters in LA while, elsewhere in the same city, The Flash star Kendrick Sampson was shot an alleged 7 times by rubber bullets, all of which fired by policemen.

Halsey, Machine Gun Kelly, and Nick Cannon have also gone out into the streets. Other prominent Americans, meanwhile, including Oprah Winfrey, Beyoncé, and Ice Cube, have been promoting the movement through social media.

The Best New Movies That Hit Netflix This Week

You know the drill at this point. The coronavirus has shut down production and distribution of original content worldwide, which includes those that are financed by Netflix. Fortunately for the streamer, however, its business model allows the company to scavenge all of entertainment history for undiscovered gems and present them to the quarantined masses. In fact, quite a few interesting titles hit the platform this week, and here’s the best of what arrived over the past few days.

First up we got The Lincoln Lawyer. This 2011 crime thriller, directed by Brad Furman and starring Matthew McConaughey, follows a lawyer who unknowingly takes on a client who not only committed the crime of which he’s been accused of, but also bears responsibility for a multitude of other horrific acts. Though critics didn’t exactly shower it with love, it’s widely regarded as the project which kicked off the McConaissance, and for that reason alone it might be worth checking out.

Next up we move on to horror, a genre which, given the state of the world, ought to have waned in popularity but, thanks to the perverse ways our human minds are wired, has only increased in demand as the coronavirus pandemic took hold of our lives. Should you be in the mood to put your faith in humanity to the test, then, you may want to check out Brad Anderson’s 2001 film Session 9, whose story explores the unexpectedly sinister history of an abandoned psych ward and is quite a chilling watch.

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for something a bit lighter, then High Strung Free Dance could be the movie for you. Arriving just today, the romantic dance-centric flick follows a “choreographer and a pianist planning for their big Broadway show.”

Last but not, least there’s the world of international films which, thanks to the explosive success of Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-winning Parasite, has become more popular than ever before. Luckily for us, Netflix is cashing in hard on this cultural sub-current, and this month the streamer is satiating our newly-discovered appetite with a gorgeous Chinese animated pic titled Ne Zha. Holding an 88% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this tale of a young dragon slayer is sure to hold a candle to the likes of both DreamWorks and Disney.

Amazon Giving Away 7 Games For Free For A Limited Time

Moving into the month of June, a lot of people around the world are still finding themselves stuck inside thanks to stay-at-home orders. As we all know, it can sometimes be a bit boring when you’re cooped up all day, but Amazon is hoping to make the next few weeks a little less stressful. Starting tomorrow, you’ll be able to download seven games for free – as long as you’re an Amazon or Twitch Prime member, that is.

As has become tradition, the retail giant will be offering these games free of charge for the next month. Come July, however, they’re set to vanish from the rotating catalog of free offerings, meaning you’ll want to grab them as soon as possible.

So, which titles will you be able to get your hands on? Well, anyone’s who eagerly awaiting the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 should check out Observer, a psychological horror game by the developers of Layers of Fear that draws heavily from the cyberpunk subgenre.

If you’re looking for something with a bit more action, Project Warlock will satisfy fans of first-person shooters like Doom or Wolfenstein. If you prefer your action to be a tad more vehicular, however, Steel Rats might be up your alley, with a focus on motorcycle combat and fast, 2.5D gameplay. On the other hand, check out Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator or Max: The Curse of Brotherhood for something a little more lighthearted.

Last, but certainly not least, roguelike fans can dive into The Flame in the Flood, a survival game that takes place on the backwaters of a run-down America, and also the remastered version of Forsaken. If you’re an Amazon or Twitch Prime member, you won’t want to pass on this deal, especially since it won’t cost you a single penny. Henry Cavill’s New Superman Deal Is Reportedly Only For Cameos

If the long-awaited official announcement of the Justice League Snyder Cut wasn’t enough, fans of the DCEU must have thought Christmas had come early twice over when it was confirmed a few days later that Henry Cavill’s Superman would also be making a return to the interconnected superhero franchise, seemingly drawing a line under the constant speculation surrounding his future.

The decision to take one of the most famous and recognizable characters in all of popular culture, use him as the jumping-off point for an entire cinematic universe in his solo reboot and then almost instantly relegate him to a supporting role has always looked like one of the DCEU’s strangest creative choices, and when Superman’s last appearance in the franchise didn’t involve Cavill at all, it looked as though the writing was on the wall for the actor’s time under the costume.

With The Witcher star having finally put the rumors to bed and committed his future to the DCEU, many fans were hoping that it would eventually lead to a Man of Steel sequel, something that has never been at the top of Warner Bros.’ list of priorities. Unfortunately, though, they shouldn’t start holding their breath just yet, because it looks like Cavill’s new deal only covers cameo appearances at the moment.

According to our intel – which comes from the same sources that told us Kevin Conroy was playing Kingdom Come Batman in “Crisis” and Diana will get her Golden Eagle armor in Wonder Woman 1984, both of which were correct – the 37 year-old’s freshly-inked contract only covers minor appearances in other movies for the time being, and there are still no firm plans on the horizon for a follow-up to Man of Steel.

While that doesn’t mean it can be ruled out completely – and some reports have claimed that it’s indeed on the cards – Cavill would need to re-negotiate his contract with the studio once again to star in any solo projects, and the most recent round of talks weren’t exactly said to have gone smoothly, so at this stage, there’s no guarantee that we’ll ever see the DCEU’s Superman as more than a background player.

Former Arrow Star Wants To Play John Stewart In Green Lantern Corps Movie

It doesn’t seem to be a project that’s being fast-tracked right now, but as far as we know, Warner Bros. is still working on the Green Lanterns Corps movie they’ve been planning for years. The idea has always been to make this reboot of the Emerald Knights a kind of cosmic buddy-cop story, starring the most famous Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Various names have been linked to play Jordan over time, but what about Stewart?

He’s said much the same before, but Michael Jai White has now once again thrown his name in the hat to play the comic book hero in the film. In a video shared by the Geek House Show, the former Spawn star revealed his answer to which Marvel/DC character he’d most want to play. “My answer would have to be from the DC universe, a character called John Stewart, because that’s what everyone wants me to play,” White said. “And I can’t let down the fans.”

White’s something of a hero of the superhero screen world. Apart from playing the title character in the aforementioned 1997 cult favorite, he also featured as Gotham gangster Gambol in The Dark Knight and starred as Bronze Tiger on numerous episodes of The CW’s Arrow. Like the man himself says, then, a lot of folks would love to see him play Stewart in the DCEU.

From what we know about the movie, though, it sounds like Stewart would be portrayed as a young Lantern, paired with the older, more experienced Jordan. So, unfortunately, White may not be what WB’s looking for. Fortunately, however, there is the Green Lantern TV show coming to HBO Max. And recent rumors have said Stewart will likewise appear in that, too. The series is produced by Arrow‘s Greg Berlanti, so it feels like White could have a shot there.

Netflix Just Added One Of The Most Underrated Horror Movies Of The 2000s

Netflix is great for hot new original content. Indeed, the streaming site invests a fortune into producing their own movies and TV shows and most of the time, they knock it out of the park, with many Netflix titles going on to become global sensations (see: Stranger Things, Extraction, The Irishman and more). But the platform is also great for discovering hidden gems, with tons of licensed content getting another chance in the spotlight.

Almost every day, the company adds older movies and TV shows that may’ve been overlooked in the past, with Netflix now giving them a chance to find a new audience. And while not everything they add is worth a watch, most of the time they manage to dig up some real underrated titles and give them a second life. Which is exactly what they’ve done today, with the streaming giant adding Session 9 to their library, a forgotten 2001 psychological thriller that’ll no doubt be enjoyed by those who decide to give it a chance.

Though nearly 20 years old now, this oft-forgotten flick still holds up remarkably well. Relying more on mood and atmosphere than blood and gore to deliver its chills and scares – sometimes a little too much – director Brad Anderson offers up a compelling and effectively creepy watch. One which horror fans will be happy they checked out.

Plot-wise, Session 9 follows an asbestos cleaning crew working in an abandoned mental hospital, where tensions begin to rise as the building’s horrific past seems to be returning to haunt them. Again, if it’s blood and gore you’re after, you’re better off looking elsewhere. But if you’re in the mood for what critics called “a deft exercise in atmospheric horror and insanity,” then Netflix‘s latest addition might just be right up your alley.

June’s Free PlayStation Plus Games Will Break A Big 2020 Trend

For many gamers around the world, PlayStation Plus is one of their hobby’s best deals. For only $60 or less a year, players get access to the PlayStation 4’s chat and multiplayer features alongside two free games per month. Of course, the free games are chosen by Sony, so sometimes they’re not everyone’s cup of tea. Still, within a 12-month period, most gamers are sure to receive at least a handful of titles they’ll enjoy, making the service well worth the price of admission.

In the past, it’s been fairly common for Sony to give subscribers quite a few indie or low-budget titles, often complimenting them with one or two high-profile games every few months. However, following last month’s poorly-received offerings, Farming Simulator 19 and Cities: Skylines, Sony seems poised to make it up by giving away two very well-known AAA games in June, which is something we’ve rarely seen the company do.

Sony first got subscribers excited by announcing that Call of Duty: WWII would be June’s headlining title, even going so far as to begin the giveaway early for an unknown reason. But they shocked and excited fans everywhere when it was revealed that they’d be also giving away the wildly popular Star Wars Battlefront II. Both games are part of extraordinarily beloved franchises and are sure to offer hundreds of hours worth of gameplay between their campaigns and extensive multiplayer suites.

Of course, if you’re interested in simulation-style games, you can still download Farming Simulator 19 and Cities: Skylines until June 2nd, which is also the same day that Star Wars Battlefront II will land on PlayStation Plus. And as mentioned previously, Call of Duty: WWII can be downloaded right away, so you’d might as well get your friends together for some classic multiplayer matches.

Suicide Squad Ayer Cut May Feature Steppenwolf

The theatrical release of Justice League rightly came under criticism for featuring one of the worst villains in the history of comic book movies thanks to Steppenwolf, but let’s not forget that Suicide Squad also boasted two antagonists that were just as bad. Both the awfully-rendered Incubus and Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress did a movie that was already butchered by studio interference absolutely no favors, and only made the troubled production zero-for-three for bad guys if Jared Leto’s Joker is also taken into account.

Director David Ayer has been frequently talking up his original vision for the antihero-led adaptation recently, perhaps in an attempt to drum up the sort of publicity and online campaigning that led to the Snyder Cut becoming a reality, and from what we’ve heard it might eventually happen should the re-cut HBO Max exclusive turn out to be a massive success.

The Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad would be a lot easier and cheaper to put together than the Snyder Cut given that the filmmaker had enough footage in the can to screen his take on the movie for test audiences, but we’ve now heard from our sources – the same ones who told us Viola Davis was returning for The Suicide Squad and Kevin Conroy was playing Kingdom Come Batman in “Crisis,” both of which were correct – that should it get the official go-ahead then the much-maligned Steppenwolf could end up making a return to our screens.

According to our intel, Steppenwolf was a big part of Ayer’s original pitch for Suicide Squad, but none of the material was ever filmed. However, talk behind the scenes is that the character could be used as part of the Bright director’s reassembled version of the movie to tie it closer to the Snyder Cut of Justice League.

On one hand, a much better take on Steppenwolf could erase some of the negativity that still surrounds his one and only live-action appearance and could ultimately complement the Snyder Cut, but on the other hand we’ve already seen one terrible version of Darkseid’s minion before, and there’s no guarantee that they’d be able to get it right the second time around.
