Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings Could Be Delayed Again

Earlier in July, we got our first Marvel movie since 2019 in the form of Black Widow, which appeared to promise that things were returning to normal when it came to the MCU. However, the recent rise in COVID-19 Delta variant cases across the nation has led to speculation that the studio’s next film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, could be held up yet again. And it’s all Clifford the Big Red Dog’s fault.

Paramount Pictures has revealed that its upcoming family flick Clifford the Big Red Dog won’t be dropping in theaters this September after all due to the increase in COVID cases. Now, Clifford was supposed to hit cinemas on September 17th, which is two weeks later than Shang-Chi is scheduled to arrive, on the 3rd. If Paramount is pulling a picture that’s further away, it suggests Disney may be close to making a similar announcement about Simu Liu’s Marvel debut.

Obviously, though, the studio will be reluctant to take that drastic step as Shang-Chi has previously had three other release dates before its current one. There is another option open to them, of course. As things stand, the movie isn’t due to be simultaneously released on streaming, as with many of Disney’s productions over the past year. But, with this current health scare, they could just switch it to that by-now well-tested release strategy. However, Disney probably don’t want to do that either given how much legal trouble dropping Black Widow on Disney Plus has got them in.

Again, this is just speculation, and there’s been no indication that the studio is actually planning to delay Shang-Chi at this stage, but it’s extremely easy to imagine that Disney execs are having discussions about exactly this issue behind closed doors. As things stand, though, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is coming our way in just over a month’s time on September 3rd.

Every Movie And TV Series Coming To Streaming In August

August is set to be a stacked month when it comes to what’s new on streaming. As always, all the majors streaming services get a load of fresh movies going up on the month, but there’s also a ton of original content being shared throughout the month that you won’t want to miss. Whichever combination of platforms you’re subscribed to, there will be plenty to keep you occupied over the course of this month.

Netflix delivers a bunch of notable new additions in August. August 20th brings The Chair, for instance, a comedy series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss starring Sandra Oh. Jason Momoa action thriller Sweet Girl drops the same day. August 23rd, meanwhile, debuts The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, the anime prequel to the hit show.

Probably the biggest fresh title coming Disney Plus in August is What If…?, the latest show from Marvel Studios. This animated anthology series, narrated by Jeffrey Wright, dives into a different alternate reality every episode. Elsewhere, Prime Video serves up Val, an autobiographical documentary film looking back at the life and career of Val Kilmer, on August 13th while Hulu premieres Nicole Kidman’s latest unmissable limited series, Nine Perfect Strangers, on the 18th.

HBO Max has what’s arguably the most notable movie release of the month, however. August 5th sees The Suicide Squad launch on streaming, the same day it hits theaters. This standalone sequel from Guardians of the Galaxy‘s James Gunn brings Task Force X back together again for another worldwide threat that only they can stop. Margot Robbie, Idris Elba and John Cena star.

Jean-Claude Van Damme’s New Movie Is Blowing Up On Netflix

There are several generations out there that are going to fire up their Netflix accounts, be greeted by French action comedy The Last Mercenary on the homepage and wonder who the hell this Jean-Claude Van Damme guy is, and why he’s randomly shown up in one of the platform’s most popular original films.

That’s an entirely expected reaction when you consider that with the exception of his brief voice cameo in Kung Fu Panda 3, the Muscles from Brussels has appeared in precisely one movie since 1999 that scored a nationwide theatrical release, which was of course his villainous turn in The Expendables 2, where he eventually met his comeuppance at the hands of Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross.

There was a time three decades ago when it looked like JCVD might replicate the success enjoyed by fellow musclebound action heroes Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, after he rode a wave of momentum by headlining a string of minor hits including Bloodsport, Cyborg, Kickboxer, Lionheart, Death Warrant, Double Impact, Universal Soldier, Hard Target, Timecop, Street Fighter and Sudden Death throughout the 80s and 90s, all of which made money despite the majority of them not being very good.

The Last Mercenary stars the 60 year-old as former secret service agent Richard Brumère, who returns to France when his son is falsely accused of trafficking by the government, thanks to a legal blunder and a criminal operation. Van Damme used to be criticized for taking himself far too seriously, but he seems to have hit a decent run of form after finally becoming self-aware of his own ridiculousness, something The Last Mercenary is happy to lean into, and it’s been good enough to see it rise to third place on the most-watched list.

Quentin Tarantino Says He’d Remake First Blood With Adam Driver As Rambo

It’s easy to forget given how quickly the sequels morphed into ultra-violent shoot em’ ups, but Sylvester Stallone’s first outing as Rambo in First Blood was much more of a psychological thriller than an action movie. The leading man gave one of the most underrated performances of his career as a troubled Vietnam vet forced to evade the law, who mounts a guerrilla campaign to outwit his would-be captors.

In fact, Rambo doesn’t even kill anyone in First Blood, with the only death that of the local deputy who loses his balance and falls out of a helicopter when he’s trying to take out the hero. That’s a far cry from the rest of the franchise, with First Blood Part II upping the body count to 76, while Rambo III and 2008’s fourth installment combined to yield over 500 onscreen casualties.

That’s hardly reflective of the source material, and in a new interview, Quentin Tarantino admitted that if he wasn’t planning to retire after his next feature and just wanted to make a good movie, he’d mount a faithful adaptation of David Morrell’s novel with Adam Driver and Kurt Russell in the lead roles.

“If I just wanted to make a good movie, that I knew would be good, I would take David Morrell’s novel for First Blood and do the novel. Not the movie that was made out of First Blood. I would do the novel. And Kurt Russell would play the sheriff, and Adam Driver would play Rambo. Every time I read it, the dialogue is so fantastic in the David Morrell novel that you’re reading it out loud. It would be so good. But now I want to do more than that. But if it was just about to make a good movie, that’s out there.”

While most action fans would surely balk at the prospect of Adam Driver throwing on the red headband and scurrying himself into the wilderness to mount a desperate battle for survival, the Star Wars alum is a phenomenal actor who would offer a much better representation of Morrell’s original Rambo than Stallone’s musclebound icon.

Having earned over $800 million at the box office and gotten a couple of statues out of the equation, Rambo is so firmly entrenched in the pop culture sphere that any remake would be a fool’s errand, though, even for someone with Tarantino’s reputation.

Robert Pattinson Reportedly Wants Horror Elements In The Batman Sequels

As a superhero who stars exclusively in big budget blockbusters that coat a great deal of money to produce, and are designed with generating the maximum amount of revenue from audiences around the world, there’s only so far you can push Batman on the big screen in terms of the darkness that surrounds the character both internally and externally.

Zack Snyder is the only filmmaker to have placed the Dark Knight in an R-rated setting, and even then Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘s Ultimate Edition and HBO Max’s Justice League never saw the inside of a theater. Matt Reeves’ The Batman looks incredibly dark from both an aesthetic and narrative point of view, but it would still be a massive surprise if it wasn’t rated PG-13.

However, we’re hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us Ben Affleck would be back as Batman in The Flash long before it was confirmed – that Robert Pattinson is reportedly keen to incorporate more horror elements into any potential sequels, with the terrors probably much better suited to being psychological in nature.

Split, Drag Me to Hell, A Quiet Place, Lights Out and Insidious were all rated PG-13, as were The Dark Knight, the True Grit remake, Hanna and more, so the boundaries can be pushed pretty far under the right circumstances. What ‘horror’ in the case of The Batman means is entirely up for debate, though, but the Caped Crusader has found himself caught up in some seriously gnarly adventures over the decades, with arcs like The Batman Who Laughs, Death of the Family, The Court of Owls and The Black Mirror all scary in their own way, so it’s not entirely out of the question to see things take a terrifying turn for Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne.

Henry Cavill Reportedly Encouraged By J.K. Simmons Returning For Batgirl

At this stage, Warner Bros. and DC Films clearly don’t give a flying f*ck about canon or continuity, unless The Flash ends up wiping the slate completely clean as has been rumored several times in the past.

One case in point is James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, which doesn’t acknowledge or reference David Ayer’s opener at all. However, both Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn interacted with Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne or Batman, which would surely make the movie part of Zack Snyder’s timeline. By that logic, then, Idris Elba’s Bloodsport putting Superman in the hospital would mean Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel.

J.K. Simmons entering talks to return as Commissioner Gordon in Batgirl only muddies the waters further, because he too is part of the SnyderVerse, but the HBO Max exclusive hasn’t confirmed or denied what part of the shared universe it occupies, if it even does at all.

That being said, we’re hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us Affleck was returning as Batman in The Flash long before it was confirmed – that Cavill is reportedly encouraged by Simmons’ return to the fold, because it indicates that the door isn’t completely closed on SnyderVerse alumni, especially a character who made their one and only appearance in Justice League.

Obviously, it doesn’t mean that anything is guaranteed to come out of it, and Cavill’s Superman was the only member of the team Simmons’ Jim Gordon didn’t meet, but it means there’s still hope that we could be seeing his Kryptonian back on our screens eventually, and the chatter isn’t going to go away until it happens, or the actor officially exits as the iconic superhero.

More Stars Reportedly Pushing For Extra Pay From Disney Plus Movies

There used to be a time, as recently as last year in fact, when there was a clear difference between a movie designed for a theatrical release and one destined for streaming. However, COVID-19 changed all of that, and we’ve seen a huge number of titles either being awarded hybrid releases very late in the day or getting pulled from the big screen altogether.

The entirety of Warner Bros.’ 2021 calendar, Disney‘s Artemis Fowl, Mulan, Black Widow, Raya and the Last Dragon, Cruella and Jungle Cruise, Paramount’s Infinite and more have all been affected, and as we’ve seen from the Scarlett Johansson situation, it could lead to a slew of stars involved in a number of projects feeling slighted that they’ve missed out on significant performance bonuses tied to box office earnings.

We’re now hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us Disney were developing a sequel to Jon Favreau’s The Lion King long before Barry Jenkins was announced for the follow up – that more Mouse House alumni could be seeking to either renegotiate their deals or demand additional pay for lending their talents to streaming exclusives.

Looking at the upcoming roster of Disney Plus originals, there are a couple of titles that stand out in terms of the talent attached. David Lowery’s Peter Pan & Wendy stars Jude Law as Captain Hook, Robert Zemeckis’ Pinocchio is currently shooting with Tom Hanks as Gepetto and long-awaited sequel Disenchanted with Amy Adams wrapped earlier this month, and all three were initially announced for a theatrical release. If Johansson’s battle against the company brings results and other contracts haven’t been amended, then Disney could be in for a world of trouble.

John Cena Says Fast & Furious Cast Were Apprehensive Of Him Joining The Franchise

It might be a goldmine for memes, but there really is a genuine sense of family running through the Fast & Furious franchise. The first installment called action all the way back in the summer of 2000 so Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster have all known each other for a long time.

Tyrese and Ludacris have been involved in the series for close to 20 years, and it’s been fifteen since Sung Kang and Justin Lin made their respective debuts in Tokyo Drift. These guys are a very tight knit group, one that’s been brought even closer together since the tragic death of Paul Walker. You have to get along with the family to stick around, something that Dwayne Johnson evidently has no interest in given his reignited feud with Vin Diesel, but John Cena is happy to be part of the crew.

As WWE’s locker room leader for the best part of fifteen years, Cena knows what it’s like when a new face walks into a place where there’s an established hierarchy and dynamic, so it’s no surprise that he knew what he was getting in for when he stepped onto the set of F9 as Jakob Toretto for the first time, admitted that the veterans were wary of the new kid on the block.

“They were kind of apprehensive to me being there, just like we are in WWE like, ‘Who is the new kid?’. But then when the new kid does something good or like when you have good open conversations, it’s like, ‘Yeah, you’re alright’.

Based on how the ninth installment ended, it would appear as though Cena will be hanging around for the tenth and eleventh chapters that look set to bring The Fast Saga to a gloriously unhinged close, so he clearly played nice with Diesel, Rodriguez, Brewster and the rest of the old guard. Jakob’s story is only just beginning, and he’s one of the good guys now.
