Avengers: Endgame Might’ve Teased Wolverine’s MCU Origins

Beforehand, fans had multiple theories about how Avengers: Endgame could lay the path for the X-Men or the Fantastic Four to arrive in the MCU later down the line. As it was, we didn’t get any post-credits scene featuring Cyclops, Galactus or whoever. Yet, there may be one small element of the movie that could be – at least retroactively – used to set up Wolverine’s origins in the franchise.

Thanos’ helicopter blade-like weapon has caused a lot of fan discussion, as it proved to be stronger than Vibranium when the villain used it to destroy Captain America’s shield. Vibranium has previously been established in the MCU as the toughest metal on Earth. In the comics, though, there’s one substance that’s even tougher: Adamantium, most known to Marvel lovers as the alloy that Logan’s skeleton is encased in, thanks to the nefarious folks at Weapon X.

In the Endgame commentary track, director Joe Russo suggests Eitri could’ve made the blade for Thanos. However, the dwarfs of Nidavellir traditionally use the mystical metal Uru for their creations. And we know that Uru and Vibranium are virtually as strong as each other. If you’ll recall, back in The Avengers, Thor attacks Cap’s shield with his hammer, causing a massive blowback of energy but leaving the two weapons in tact. So, Adamantium is really the only element it can be.

But what happened to this potentially-Adamantium blade once Thanos was dusted? Well, it could have vanished with him, but it’s also possible that it was discarded and abandoned on the battlefield. And Spider-Man: Homecoming and other MCU entries have proven that dangerous alien tech left behind from the Avengers’ exploits often ends up on the black market. Perhaps the blade falls into the wrong hands, then. Namely, the creators of the MCU version of Weapon X.

Until we know exactly how Marvel will fold the X-Men into the MCU, this is just a fun fan theory, but it would make a lot of sense and add an interesting new element to Avengers: Endgame.
