James Gunn Wants To Re-Release Guardians Of The Galaxy With New Scenes

Marvel Studios seems to have started a new trend for their movies by releasing extended cuts towards the end of a film’s cinematic run to boost ticket sales. They’ve now done this with both Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From HomeBut could something similar happen with past MCU efforts? For instance, could we get extended cuts released on Blu-Ray someday? Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn sure hopes so.

Gunn’s been discussing his song choices in the Guardians films on Twitter today and while responding to one fan about tracks that didn’t make it into the final cut, the filmmaker revealed that he removed one montage featuring ELO’s “Livin’ Thing” from 2014’s franchise-starter that he now regrets.

When another follower asked if this “Livin’ Thing” sequence could ever get released, Gunn admitted that it’s a “dream” of his to do a re-release of Vol. 1 with this particular scene reinstated as well as a few other “small additions.”

Gunn later clarified that the theatrically-released cuts of his Marvel movies were still absolutely his, but in cases like the “Livin’ Thing” scene, he’s changed his mind about the odd decision since then.

As interested as we are in recuts for Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, most fans would probably prefer if Gunn got on with shooting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 first. With the director busy currently busy making The Suicide Squad for DC, the much-anticipated threequel and final adventure for the team isn’t coming in either 2020 or 2021.

We suspected it could’ve dropped in May 2020, but this release date was recently assigned to Black Panther 2. At least Chris Pratt’s teased that the Guardians could return elsewhere in the MCU before Vol. 3 gets here. Our best bet for that is Thor: Love and Thunder, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
