Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie will be looking for a queen to rule beside her in the very recently announced Thor: Love And Thunder. You heard that right. In a reveal whose applause probably shook the roof at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, it’s been made official that Valkyrie will be Marvel’s first LGBTQ hero.
It’s already been said enough, but we’ll say it again; this is a long time coming. Marvel has been teasing the world with more LGBTQ representation in their movies for a long time now, but has yet to come through. We were almost introduced to a bisexual Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok, but Thompson later explained that a key scene was cut from the final version that would’ve revealed it. There was even a scene cut from Black Panther that would have had fellow female Wakandans Okoye and Ayo flirting.
Anyways, speaking about this big milestone, here’s what studio president Kevin Feige had to say:
“The answer is yes,” he said of Valkyrie having an LGBTQ storyline. “How that impacts the story remains to be seen with that level of representation you’ll see across our films, not in just Thor 4.”
What does this mean for Thor 4? Well, as thrilling as SDCC is each year, it leaves us with so many more questions every time. Now that we know Natalie Portman will be returning and taking up Mjolnir as our first female Thor, that covers the thunder, but where will the love be?
Will Marvel not only give us our first bisexual hero, but also our first gay super-lovers? And what the heck happened to Chris Hemsworth’s Thor? He’ll most likely be off planet arguing for the captain’s controls with Star-Lord and the rest of the Guardians, but I don’t think the world is ready to say goodbye to the God of Thunder quite yet. We know he’ll have a role in Love and Thunder, but how big will it be?
These are the questions we need answers to, but with Thor: Love And Thunder still so far off, it’s unlikely we’ll get them anytime soon. Still, it’s nice to know the film will mark a big milestone for the MCU and as soon as we learn more about Valkyrie’s LGBTQ storyline, we’ll be sure to let you know.
