Avengers: Endgame Writers Want To Do A Superman Movie

A few key players from the MCU have hopped over to the DC universe of late, with The Avengers’ Joss Whedon completing Justice League for Warner Bros. and James Gunn swapping the Guardians of the Galaxy for the Suicide Squad with his upcoming sequel. So, could Avengers: Endgame scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely be next? Well, they definitely seem interested in tackling Superman on the big screen.

ScreenRant caught up with the duo at SDCC and asked which DC hero they’d like to get their hands on. McFeely took the question and made it known that he’d like to do “a really good” Superman movie.

“I mean, I think Captain America shows there are certainly ways to do a really good Superman movie in this day. You don’t have to dirty him up, you don’t have to get rid of his earnestness. I’m a big — the Christopher Reeve Superman is one of my favorite movies. So that’s one we certainly borrow from all the time.”

McFeely doesn’t mention the films by name, but he’s no doubt referencing the Superman movies of Zack Snyder in which the director controversially, as the writer puts it, dirtied the character up. Most infamously, Supes snapped General Zod’s neck at the end of Man of Steel.

Conversely, Markus and McFeely’s Captain America films also tackled the idea of an old-fashioned hero with traditional values existing in our complicated modern world, but executed it in a completely different way – as Steve’s center is kept the same, he’s forced to deal with 21st century evils like government oversight and terrorism.

Obviously, Snyder’s way has its passionate fans, but it’s fair to say general audiences have responded better to the Cap films than Henry Cavill’s Superman movies. Maybe Markus and McFeely could be the best people for DC to turn to then if and when they decide to reboot the Last Son of Krypton in the DCEU?
