Black Widow Will Take Place After Civil War And Address Budapest

If your first thought when you heard Black Widow was getting her own movie AND kicking off the MCU’s Phase 4 was “why?”, then you have the ongoing SDCC to thank for answering that question.

Hot on the heels of the news that Natasha Romanoff will be going up against the Taskmaster in her first solo outing is the revelation that we’ll finally figure out what happened in Budapest. In case you haven’t been paying attention for the past 11 years, the Budapest incident has come up a few times in the MCU. Specifically, Black Widow and Hawkeye’s adventures there.

A deleted scene from Winter Soldier mentioned it and Romanoff and Barton also reminisced about the mission a bit during the battle of New York in The Avengers. Marvel’s been teasing us about something big having happened in Budapest for a long time now, and we’re finally going to get to see what went down.

It can’t be pretty, either. S.H.I.E.L.D. sent the two master assassins to Hungary to do something, and as always, nothing seemed to go right. Unless you count the two future Avengers surviving whatever happened.

Of course, the other thing fans were wondering about here was if the film was going to be a prequel or be set in an alternate universe? Seeing how Black Widow sacrificed herself in Avengers: Endgame, the prequel route seemed to be the right way to go. But according to reports coming out of Comic-Con, the spinoff will actually be set after Civil War, with ComicBook.com telling us that we’ll get to see “what happened to Natasha after she pushed back against Black Panther to let Steve and Bucky go on their big mission.”

Tell us, though, are you excited to finally find out what occurred with Black Widow in Budapest? Whether you are or not, we’ll all find out together on May 1st, 2020 when the movie hits theaters.
