The upcoming New Gods movie, from A Wrinkle in Time‘s Ava DuVernay is finally beginning to pick up some traction and we couldn’t be more excited about it. After all, DC has announced so many potential projects over the years that often seem to go nowhere that we’ve learned to adopt a “believe it when we see it” mentality when it comes to the studio.
A solo venture for the inhabitants of the Fourth World is indeed happening, though, and we’re pleased to see that DuVernay is now opening up on her plans for the pic. Though we don’t know too much about it just yet, the director did confirm a few things on Twitter earlier this week, telling fans that the movie will feature both Darkseid and the Furies, “a squad of elite female warriors that are fanatically loyal to Darkseid.”
While you could argue that most people already assumed we’d see both of them up on the big screen in the film, it’s still nice to get confirmation from DuVernay herself. Besides, with the director starting to discuss her plans now, who knows what she may reveal next?
As far as plot details go, well, unfortunately the filmmaker wouldn’t spill much, but we’ve previously told you that New Gods will focus mostly on Mister Miracle and Big Barda trying to escape the hellish planet known as Apokolips. It’s also said that the politics and conflicts between Apokolips and its rival world, New Genesis, will factor into the storyline.
Given that there’s so much ground to cover with this Fourth World stuff, it’s certainly smart to place the focus on two characters in particular and if you’re in need of a refresher on the actual New Gods comic, see below:
The New Gods, or the “Fourth World,” as it’s frequently known, were created by legendary comic book creator Jack Kirby, and initially debuted in a trilogy of related comics written and drawn by Kirby that were published in the very early 1970s: New Gods, Forever People and Mister Miracle. None of these comics ran for very long, but together they formed the groundwork to a universe with near limitless potential.
The New Gods are exactly that—they’re new gods. They came into existence after the world of the old gods, the gods of classical mythology, was destroyed during Ragnarok. The world of these known deities was split and became two separate planets, forever linked, but utterly different. One is called New Genesis and the other is Apokolips.
From Selma to A Wrinkle in Time to When They See Us to The New Gods, it’s been quite the journey so far for Ava DuVernay and we can’t wait to see what she brings to the DC Extended Universe with what’s shaping up to be a very, very exciting movie.
