Now that Avengers: Endgame has finally becoming the highest grossing film of all time, we’re going to proudly discuss spoilers. You literally have no excuse.
With that said, there’re probably a great many people across the planet still trying to wrap their heads around and cope with the events of the game-changing film. And luckily for them, Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely went to San Diego Comic-Con 2019 to help them out.
However, one interview with ComicBook.com may cause some unneeded panicking among fans, as Markus and McFeely explained that in the Avengers’ do-or-die mission, they were considering killing off even more heroes. Here’s what Markus had to say:
“We may have played with some others… but arc-wise and mathematically it is the perfect ending for Tony Stark. He needs to make a sacrifice – he needs to make the ultimate sacrifice, when you go from selfish to that.”
While way too many people have signed the petition to bring Tony back to life – nearly 64,000 at the time of writing – it’s hard to say his arc wasn’t brought to a fitting close in Endgame. After a decade of “me, me, me,” watching Iron Man give up his life was the perfect bittersweet moment.
And in that spirit, it was also a breath of fresh air to see Steve Rogers, who started off his MCU venture by jumping on top of a grenade, take something for himself: a life with Peggy Carter.
It almost goes without saying that every hero on the Marvel lineup doesn’t have that appetizing, full-circle storyline going for them. At least not yet. Quite simply, a lot of the other characters haven’t had the amount of mileage as Tony and Steve going into Avengers: Endgame. But now that we know Markus and McFeely have toyed with the idea, the possibilities for more funerals are endless.
