Avengers: Endgame Writer Explains Why Nick Fury Didn’t Take Part In The Final Battle

Just about anybody who’s anybody took part in the final climactic battle of Avengers: Endgamewith the galaxy’s greatest heroes united in defeating Thanos and his evil horde of henchmen once and for all. However, there were a few faces who seemed to be missing. One of these is Nick Fury. Yep, the man who originally brought the Avengers together wasn’t present for their greatest victory.

During their panel at Comic-Con, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely were asked why Fury wasn’t part of the battle. Markus took the question and explained that there were so many super-powered characters there that the former  S.H.I.E.L.D. boss would have looked a little wimpy in comparison.

“I don’t think we ever put him in. It was [because] we have such a traffic jam of heroes and so much power, that to have a guy who, in combat, would just be firing a gun… it doesn’t come off well for Nick Fury, frankly.”

This explanation makes sense to some extent. As good as he is with a firearm, Fury maybe wouldn’t have been particularly useful up against an army of Outriders and Chitauri. However, when you remember that even Howard the Duck got to take part in the battle, then Fury’s absence starts to feel a little bit strange. Especially given that Spider-Man: Far From Home revealed he has a squad of Skrulls under his command. They would’ve been pretty handy in the fight, if you ask us.

Of course, Fury did show up elsewhere in Avengers: Endgame. In the following scene, in fact. Samuel L. Jackson turned up for a silent cameo, amongst the other mourners at Tony Stark’s funeral. Plus, he had major roles in both FFH and Captain Marvel this year. So, all in all, it’s not like Fury fans haven’t been well-fed of late. We’re just not sure when we’ll see him next, though, due to what’s currently on the slate for Phase 4.
