Rockstar Games are renowned for their unwillingness to unveil titles until they’re in a relatively late stage of development. The knock-on effect of this is that their many fans become positively ravenous for every scrap of information. With all that in mind, take the following with a pinch of salt.
Recently, Redditor JackOLantern1982 posted a thread in r/GamingLeaksAndRumours containing what appears to be a comprehensive rundown of what’s coming in Grand Theft Auto 6. The information is apparently from “two friends” who’ve worked for Kotaku and PC Gamer, and they haven’t been denied by a third friend who works for Rockstar themselves. Yes, it’s all a bit “My uncle works for Nintendo,” but I guess stranger things have happened.
Anyway, the leak says that Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently codenamed PROJECT AMERICAS and is set in both Rio de Janeiro and Vice City, but with linear missions taking place in Liberty City and (possibly) Cuba. The game will unfold across the 1970s – 1980s and follow the career of a drug lord named Ricardo, with the tone heavily inspired by Narcos. There will also be lots of subtitle reading as, just as in Max Payne 3, each character will speak their native language.
In terms of gameplay, the tone is described as being more arcade-y than Red Dead Redemption 2, but with some realistic elements. Weather will apparently be the big technological innovation, with real-time floods, hurricanes and so on. Similarly, as the years tick by, buildings and vehicles will evolve, a process that is apparently causing headaches for the design team.
Whether you choose to believe this or not is up to you. My opinion is that while this is a relatively solid idea, it’s wishful thinking rather than anything based in fact. Despite that, we should hopefully get a glimpse of what’s next from Rockstar by the time the year is out.
