The Eternals was officially announced at Marvel’s Comic-Con panel last weekend. The confirmation was perfectly timed, too, as production on the movie is now underway in the UK. In fact, these snaps from the set in Pinewood Studios showcase an exciting location that’s been pulled right from the comics.
Bespin Bulletin shared the images, theorizing that this half-constructed set could be for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. MCU fans in the comments, however, correctly suggested that it was for The Eternals instead. Jeremy Conrad of MCU Cosmic then deduced that this must be the Tomb of the Space Gods, an Aztec temple featured in the classic Eternals comics from creator Jack Kirby.
Check out the set pics below, along with an image from Kirby’s work for comparison:
In the comics, the Eternal Ikaris (played by Richard Madden in the MCU) disguises himself as a human cameraman to tag along with archaeologist Doctor Damian and his daughter Margo’s expedition to find the Aztec City of the Space Gods, built to honor the Celestials. We previously got our first look at the Celestials – the creators of the Eternals and their rivals, the Deviants – via a piece of key art that dropped online following the SDCC reveal.
Alongside Madden, The Eternals stars an ensemble cast including Angelina Jolie as Thena, Kumail Nunjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh and Salma Hayek as a gender-flipped Ajak. In fact, Ikaris travels to the temple in the comics in order to revive Ajak.
Now that filming is officially underway, expect more concrete news on the movie’s plot to come to light. By the looks of things, though, the story will be paying homage to Kirby’s comics in a major way, while also making some big strides for the MCU, too, through its diverse cast.
The Eternals, the second installment of Phase 4, hits theaters on November 6th, 2020.
