Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness Coming In 2021

The announcements are coming thick and fast during the Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic Con, with Kevin Feige and company throwing out huge reveals left, right and center. The latest is that the long-rumored Doctor Strange sequel has finally been officially confirmed, and based on the title alone those who loved the psychedelic flair of the original are in for a treat.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness might be the best title yet for any movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and promises that the sequel is going to double down on the trippy, Jack Kirby-inspired visuals that were the undoubted highlights of the first installment, with director Scott Derrickson and star Benedict Cumberbatch taking the stage to reveal the upcoming sequel, as well as the official logo:

Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch is also boarding the project, along with news that Disney+ series WandaVision will directly inform the events of Multiverse of Madness. This also gives us a good indication that the story of WandaVision will take place in the rumored MCU multiverse, a concept that was originally hinted at in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Cumberbatch addressed the crowd and emphasized that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will veer further into the horror genre that we’ve seen from the MCU so far:

“I’m really excited to be at the dawn of this project and I think it’s vital to maintain the humor we had in the first one but with this twist of horror that will really have people gripped.”

The first Doctor Strange made almost $700m at the box office so it was virtually a foregone conclusion that a sequel would be in the works, but this is the first concrete information about the project that we’ve had from Marvel Studios. Scott Derrickson even claims that he wants to make the first “scary MCU film”, before Kevin Feige jokingly reassured the audience that “it’s gonna be PG-13, and you’re gonna like it”.
