New Pokémon Sword And Shield Trailer Reveals Hidden Abilities And Special Items

A brand new trailer for Pokémon Sword and Shield has just landed.

Shown today at the Pokémon World Championships, this latest footage takes a deep dive into some of the abilities, items and moves making their debut in the Switch exclusives with some accompanying action-packed gameplay to boot. Sadly, no new Pokédex additions, Galarian Pokémon or form-changing critters have been revealed this time around, but this is your first chance to see the smoke-spewing Galarian Weezing in action.

There’s a wealth of information to digest here, so let’s break it down piece by piece. First up are two brand new Held Items being introduced for competitive play. Eject Pack and Room service can be given to any Pokémon in order to enable its unique effect, though picking the right ‘Mon is critical if you want to make the most of their effects.

New Items

  • Eject Pack – causes the holding Pokémon to be switched out from battle whenever its stats are lowered
  • Room Service – reduces a Pokémon’s speed during the Trick Room effect

The applications of the first trinket are pretty straightforward, but Room Service warrants some build around tactics. For the unaware, Trick Room, when used, changes speed priority. Slow Pokémon become the first to attack; fastest the last. Combine Room Service with a Pokémon that moves like molasses and hits like a truck for best results.

As for abilities, two are shown in the video and each is exclusive to a particular Pokémon. Here’s what they do:

New Abilities

  • Corviknight: Mirror Armor – reflects any status effects back to the opponent
  • Galarian Weezing: Neutralizing Gas – neutralizes the effects of all abilities

Finally, the footage comes to a close by further detailing some of the unique attributes of Dynamax Pokémon. Besides their gargantuan size, each so-called ‘Max Move’ develops a string of special side effects. Raichu, for example, is seen ignoring an attack that would normally cause flinch and prevent it from attacking. And that about covers your lot for Pokémon Sword and Shield‘s latest info dump.

The Pokémon World Championships, on the other hand, are still ongoing, so expect further franchise-related announcements like this one to roll out over the coming days.
