Birds of Prey is set to offer cinema’s first all-female superhero team, bringing together some of Gotham’s toughest anti-heroines. Without Barbara Gordon to steer the ship, though, the Birds will be pretty different from their traditional depiction in the comics. However, the movie will still honor the characters’ roots in ways that’ll please the fans. For instance, Jurnee Smollett-Bell’s Black Canary is expected to suit up in her classic comic book look.
We Got This Covered has been informed by our sources – the same ones who told us Black Mask will be gay in the film, which was later confirmed – that Dinah Lance will get an outfit that’s close to what she wears on the page. The teaser trailer for BoP saw the cast in clothes that were pretty unique to the DCEU, but our sources say Black Canary will get her comic book costume towards the end of the movie. We didn’t have it spelled out for us what it’ll entail, but presumably we can expect black leather and fishnets.
Smollett-Bell will be joined in BoP by Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress and Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya. Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is the undisputed star of the film, though, as is clear from its full title: Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). The “fantabulous emancipation” of the moniker refers to Harley going it on her own after splitting with the Joker.
Our sources have previously confirmed that the Clown Prince of Crime will have a cameo in the flick, too, just not played by Jared Leto. Set photos have backed up this info as well, revealing a scene which appears to show the pair’s break-up. Harley will then uncover her heroic side when she joins with the Birds to rescue young orphan Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) from the evil Black Mask (Ewan McGregor). Chris Messina also stars as secondary villain Victor Zsasz.
Birds of Prey is reportedly set to undergo major reshoots soon, after the studio was left nervous over the initial cut, and we’ll see how it all turns out when it hits theaters on February 7th, 2020.
