Thor: Love and Thunder will bring back not only Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder and Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, but also Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. Except this time Thor’s ex will become Thor herself, as she’ll be deemed worthy enough to lift Mjolnir and therefore granted the Asgardian’s powers.
We’re all assuming Portman will be playing the same Jane from 2011’s Thor and Thor: The Dark World. However, ScreenRant has put forward the intriguing theory that the female Thor could be a different version of Jane who crosses over to the main timeline. This could explain why Jane is now worthy when she wasn’t in earlier films.
It would also explain how Mjolnir is back. The hammer was destroyed in Thor: Ragnarok and, though a duplicate was pinched from the past in Avengers: Endgame, it was returned to its rightful place by the end of the movie. So Jane will have to get her abilities from a Mjolnir from another timeline, which could mean she’s from a separate timeline, too.
The idea of alternate timelines is, of course, something that was introduced in Endgame. The Loki TV series will also further explore this, with it following the divergent version of the trickster. And remember that Loki arrives in early 2021 so that could sow the seeds for this development before Love and Thunder drops in November that same year.
On the other hand, Jane might be from another universe out there in the multiverse all together. Again, this would be a natural development as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the previous MCU movie to release before Love and Thunder, as it comes out in May 2021.
SR also points out that the original Jason Aaron comic run of The Mighty Thor that introduced the super-powered Jane was part of the “Secret Wars” event, which saw various universes merge together. Waititi is known to be drawing from Aaron’s comics so it’s possible this idea could get in the mix.
