James Gunn Won’t Say If The Suicide Squad’s A Reboot Or Sequel

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is still very much an unknown quantity. There’s been so much controversy swirling around the project that no one has paid much attention to the fact that few, if any, specifics have been released, aside from casting.

One of the biggest questions surrounding the film is whether it’s a sequel, following up on David Ayer’s commercially successful yet critically disappointing Suicide Squad, or a reboot, something which DC and Warner Bros. don’t seem to have an issue doing, as Batman is being rebooted by director Matt Reeves with a new actor in line, as Ben Affleck officially left the role earlier this year.

Adding more confusion to the situation is Gunn himself, who’s decided to be intentionally coy about the state of the movie. When asked directly on social media if The Suicide Squad is either a sequel or a reboot, the director responded by asking if those were his only two options.

Unfortunately, at this stage, there’s really no telling what’s going to happen. There are a number of characters reprising their roles from the first film, like Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. But at the same time, it’s been reported that Idris Elba is replacing Will Smith as Deadshot.

That, however, was quickly walked back, and it was said that the former guardian of Asgard’s Rainbow Bridge was going to be a different character altogether, most likely Bronze Tiger. But even that’s been called into question, and Elba’s role, much like what the film’s intended to be, remains a mystery.

Of course, it’s nothing new for Gunn to mess with the public in regard to what he’s working on and at this point, it’s a flip of the coin as to whether The Suicide Squad is going to be a reboot or a sequel. Until someone on the inside decides to open up and illuminate the fans, all we can do is guess.

But what do you think? Should the film take DC’s “worst of the worst” back to the start with a fresh take, or should it continue the journey that David Ayer started them off on in 2016?
