The most hotly-anticipated panel of San Diego Comic Con 2019 is finally underway, with Kevin Feige taking the stage as Marvel Studios prepares to unveil it’s upcoming slate of projects, and no doubt drop a few bombshells on the way. After a brief recap of the Infinity Saga, Feige revealed the news that the studio had been desperate to announce:
“Within a few days, Avengers: Endgame will be the biggest movie of all time. The biggest movie of all time.”
Many had been questioning Endgame’s ability to overtake Avatar’s mammoth $2.78bn haul, but the recent re-release of the 22nd entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe pushed it ever closer to the milestone. The most recent box office reports claim that Endgame is only $500k behind Avatar’s total earnings, and by the time the weekend is over the Avengers will have overtaken James Cameron’s epic to become the highest-grossing movie of all time.
Disney co-chairman Alan Horn was quick to congratulate the team behind Avengers: Endgame, as well as offering his commiserations to James Cameron, who reigned supreme as the director of the two highest-earning movies ever made until Joe and Anthony Russo’s comic book blockbuster came along.
“A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted Avengers: Endgame to these historic heights. Of course, even with the passage of a decade, the impact of James Cameron’s Avatar remains as powerful as ever, and the astonishing achievements of both of these films are ongoing proof of the power of movies to move people and bring them together in a shared experience. The talented filmmakers behind these worlds have much more in store, and we look forward to the future of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Pandora.”
The Marvel Studios panel has certainly gotten off to a great start, and there will no doubt be plenty more huge announcements to come.
