After the heroine’s recent solo debut and her small but crucial role in Avengers: Endgame, it’s clear that Captain Marvel is about to become a major player in the MCU’s future, but to go one further, we’re now hearing that Carol Danvers may soon find herself as the new leader of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
This is something that was teased a while back actually, in a Captain Marvel behind-the-scenes featurette where we got a statement from Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige teasing the important part the heroine will play in the franchise moving forward:
“Now Captain Marvel is about to take the lead, and be at the forefront of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe,” said the producer.
Now, sources close to We Got This Covered have confirmed that what Feige said is indeed what the studio’s planning. From what we understand, though the original Avengers are done with, Marvel’s still looking to bring us another iteration of the team. Dubbed the New Avengers – not to be confused with the Young Avengers, who are also going to appear in the MCU soon – Captain Marvel will apparently be the leader of this group.
We’re told that Black Panther and Sam Wilson’s Captain America will be the “co-leaders” and together, the three heroes will carry the franchise forward. It’s unclear when exactly this new team will officially form, or what will become of other prominent characters like Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, but we imagine Phase 4 will focus heavily on second solo outings for Carol, Spidey, Stephen Strange, T’Challa and more before Phase 5 sees the remaining heroes form this New Avengers team, with Captain Marvel leading the way.
As with all scoops and rumors, Marvel hasn’t confirmed any of this just yet, but from the various hints they’ve dropped, it’s pretty clear that this is the direction they’re heading in and as soon as we hear more about what’s in store, we’ll be sure to let you know.
