The games industry’s biggest event of the year is but a stone’s throw away once more, and you know exactly what that means.
Yes, as is par for the course whenever E3 rolls around, a deluge of leaks, rumors and hype parades precede the exhibition’s official beginning and the trend certainly isn’t changing course in 2019. One particularly hot topic this time around is Marvel’s Avengers. First announced over two years ago, the superpowered adventure is confirmed to be putting in an appearance at publisher Square Enix’s annual press conference next month. Some details, however, have already been let out of the bag early, it seems.
Following on from previous rumors indicating that developer Crystal Dynamics will be adopting several elements from Square’s own Kingdom Hearts series, these latest leaks are equally as juicy. The first comes by way of Reddit user iAMA_Leb_AMA, who, having scoured the internet for preliminary E3 info, happened upon a description of Marvel’s Avengers that reads as follows.
This is the defining Avengers gaming experience: an epic action-adventure that combines cinematic storytelling with continuous single-player and co-operative gameplay. Assemble in teams up to four players, master extraordinary abilities, customise your heroes to fit your playstyle, and combine powers to defend an ever-expanding world under constant threat.
The snafu has since been removed by E3 organizer ESA, but not fast enough. Given the phrasing, first responders on social media have posited that the title could intend to follow a Live Service format in the same vein as Destiny, The Division and Anthem, though, given the latter’s poor reception, I can only hope Crystal Dynamics has taken notes for its own potential version. We wouldn’t want the first part of the Marvel Gaming Universe to fall flat on its face now, would we?
No, there’s no such confirmation of Marvel’s Avengers serving as the ignition for an MGU, though fans have already stuck to the idea like glue. “I just want a cameo from Insomniac’s Spidey to confirm they take place in the same universe,” wishes Reddit user SatisfiedSeal88, inadvertently spurring discussion of the prospect. Given the drastically different design process between games and film, such an outcome may be tough to achieve, but an MGU would certainly be something we’d love to see and given how much success the studio has seen in cinemas with the model, it’s not hard to imagine them trying something similar with their games.
Marvel’s Avengers is currently without a release date, though you can likely expect that and more to be revealed next week. Stay tuned.
