Avengers: Endgame blew the MCU wide open in multiple ways, from bringing the stories of many key heroes to a close to shunting everything five years into the future. There’s also the fact that it introduced time travel into the franchise, thereby creating various alternate versions of the timeline where events played out differently, thanks to the Avengers’ bungled efforts to fetch the Infinity Stones from history.
Ever since Endgame arrived, fans have been keen to find out more about these other timelines, and it seems Marvel is happy to oblige, according to our latest intel. We Got This Covered has been informed by a source that the studio plans to explore the splintered timelines in the MCU going forward. The idea could evolve to include movies or TV shows, or possibly both.
Of course, some of the most notable branched-off timelines introduced in Endgame include the one where Loki escapes with the Space Stone from 2012 New York. This is a big one, too, as it would mean the God of Mischief was never redeemed and presumably didn’t end up dead at Thanos’ hand. It’s likely this timeline will be explored pretty soon as well, as we’ve also been told that Tom Hiddleston will return as the God of Mischief beyond his upcoming Disney Plus series.
Another is the final divergence in the timeline that occurs in the film, with Captain America traveling back to the 1940s and remaining with Peggy Carter. Following this one seems less certain, however, as writers Markus and McFeely believe that Steve actually stayed in the main timeline. Plus, the Russos aren’t sure that Chris Evans would want to undo his Avengers: Endgame exit as the super-soldier.
Whatever branches they choose to explore though, this could open up whole new avenues of the MCU, leading to standalone Joker-like movies for Marvel. We’ll keep you posted as more comes in, but for now, you can color us intrigued.
