‘Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning’ is beating the Disney reject owning the box office and a $400M joyless dud

Earlier, reports appeared saying Tom Cruise is miffed about Barbie and Oppenheimer taking all the screens away from his Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One. Well, in case he was really that angry, he truly shouldn’t have been as his return as the exceptional spy Ethan Hunt is already winning the box office in its first weekend with a franchise record.

As reported by Deadline, Dead Reckoning is exceeding expectations — as expected — with its 5-day opening domestic earnings of $80 million, overtaking Mission Impossible II which nabbed $78.8 million during the same period back in 2000. What is even more impressive is the film’s global opening, which is currently sitting at $235 million — miles ahead of the paltry $130 million Disney’s $400 million failed attempt to capitalize on decades-old nostalgia i.e., Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny managed to bag.

But Harrison Ford’s not-so-magical return to the silver screen as Indy isn’t the only film Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning is looking to outpace.

While the rather controversial Sound of Freedom — that survived Disney’s attempt to shelve it — is still doing mighty fine at the box office even as the controversies that question the authenticity of its true story continue to surround it, it will have to make peace with being second place. The anti-trafficking thriller by Angel Studios is currently ruling the rank with $85 million worldwide against a $14.5 million budget and is expected to continue amping up the figures.

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, despite being decked in the presence of THE Tom Cruise, is expected to feel a decline in its ability to rule the box office after Barbie and Oppenheimer finally hit the theaters. But it is safe to say, the return of Ethan Hunt challenging death (and winning!) yet again is already a certified winner.
