‘Morbius’ effects designer unsurprisingly blames Sony for shoddy CGI

‘Morbius’ effects designer unsurprisingly blames Sony for shoddy CGI

The superhero genre is almost literally minting money for any studio with the resources to produce a movie. So when Morbius, the latest in Sony’s increasingly unpopular “Spider-Man Without Spider-Man Cinematic Universe,” flopped on its release last month, it became Hollywood’s latest game of hot potato of blame. Conor O’Sullivan, the monster makeup master who is credited with the look of the movie’s titular Living Vampire, as well as all the film’s creature designs, became the latest living embodiment of that Simpsons meme where Homer backs away slowly through a hedge.

O’Sullivan, who created the White Walkers for Game of Thrones, and scored an Oscar nomination for creating Joker’s makeup in The Dark Knight, was being interviewed by Inverse about his work in the forthcoming Finnish horror film Hatching when the question of Morbius came up. He explained that studio Sony Pictures threw out all of his work at the last minute:

I did Morbius, and I must have produced 500 or 600 designs. And at the end of all of that, they threw something on the table — literally the day before we started shooting — that was completely different from the path that we’d been on. So, it ended up digital because Sony wanted to do this completely different design. And now they’ve brought the film out, and it’s gone back to all my designs, which have all been done digitally!

But Sony wasn’t the only passenger thrown under the bus, as O’Sullivan tactfully added that he likes to work with a director who gives him, you know, direction. Seemingly, Morbius’ Daniel Espinosa did not:

We do like it when a director comes to the table with a full idea of exactly what they want. It’s nice to contribute designs, to be part of the process of developing them. It’s also nice to be told what to do.

Espinosa, meanwhile, has been trying to get the stink of The Living Vampire off of him, pitching more Spidey-Without-Spidey films, asking his friends to curate the reviews he reads, and explaining to the press why Tyrese Gibson’s character Agent Stroud, whose defining trait is his bionic arm, doesn’t have a bionic arm.

Tyrese, for his part, has been fantasizing that he’s in a different Marvel franchise, and another actor threw the entire editing crew under the bus before desperately pitching himself for a recurring MCU role.

Morbius, which has failed to score a sequel after breaking all the wrong box office records, will apparently drop on VOD on May 19th, a fact accidentally leaked by an Indian ticket-booking service.

Every Peggy Carter appearance in the MCU so far

Every Peggy Carter appearance in the MCU so far

Agent Peggy Carter is one of the best examples of how the MCU has turned minor comic book characters into beloved fan favorites. While her comics counterpart is traditionally a minor figure, Marvel Studios’ Peggy — as brilliantly played by Hayley Atwell — is one of the popular heroines in the franchise. In fact, she deserves credit for being the very first female character to lead their own MCU project.

It’s no surprise that she’s appeared all over the place over the past 10 years plus, then, with Atwell reprising her role in multiple movies and TV series, set at different points in Peggy’s life. And, while she has yet to be confirmed to feature, it looks a lot like Atwell will return again in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, as the latest promos have glimpsed Captain Carter battling Strange and Scarlet Witch.

So, ahead of Peggy’s latest comeback, now is the perfect opportunity to recap her MCU timeline to date, from her beginnings in World War Two to the debut of her superhero doppelganger from another universe.

Captain America: The First Avenger

Peggy made her grand entrance in The First Avenger. A British MI5 agent transferred to the Strategic Scientific Reserve to aid in Project Rebirth, Carter was instrumental in inspiring Steve Rogers to become Captain America. Her fellow future S.H.I.E.L.D. co-founders, Howard Stark and Chester Phillips, also appear.

Agent Carter (One-Shot)

Her next appearance came in Marvel One-Short short film Agent Carter, in which Peggy singlehandedly retrieves the dangerous Zodiac serum from enemy hands. The short is essentially a pilot for her subsequent TV series, even though its ending — which sees Peggy invited by Howard to help him run S.H.I.E.L.D. — conflicts with the show’s continuity.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Image via Marvel Studios

In The Winter Soldier, once recovered from the ice, Steve visits the now-elderly Peggy, who is tragically suffering from memory problems. Elsewhere, Steve watches a documentary featuring an interview with a younger Peggy, in which she mentions marrying another man. His identity has never been revealed since (although Endgame suggests it’s Steve himself).

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Hayley Atwell appeared in two episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season two, via wartime flashbacks. In season premiere “Shadows”, Peggy and the Howling Commandos capture HYDRA leader Werner Reinhardt. In episode eight, “The Things We Bury”, Peggy is seen interrogating Reinhardt in prison.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Image via Marvel Studios

Though Peggy doesn’t properly show up in Age of Ultron, Steve has a vision of her in a hallucination planted in his mind by Scarlet Witch. The hallucination imagines if Steve had made it to the dance he had arranged with Peggy before he plowed into the ice.

Agent Carter (TV series)

Image via Marvel Television

In her very own TV series, Peggy has to face sexism and prove her worth to her male colleagues in the SSR, working in the New York (season one) and Los Angeles (season two) branches after the war. Peggy faces many enemies over the show’s two seasons, including Russian organization Leviathan, Black Widow Dottie Underwood, and actress-turned-supervillain Whitney Frost.

Ant-Man

Image via Marvel Studios

Peggy cameos at the beginning of Ant-Man, in a flashback set in 1989. She is present along with Howard Stark and S.H.I.E.L.D. Head of Defense Mitchell Carson when Hank Pym elects to break from the organization to prevent them from using his Pym Particles.

Avengers: Endgame

When Steve travels back to 1970 as part of Avengers: Endgame‘s Time Heist, he briefly views his lost love in her office at Camp Lehigh. At the end of the movie, Steve travels back again, this time to the 1940s, so he can reunite with “his best girl” permanently. The pair grow old together until her death in 2016 (as seen in Captain America: Civil War).

What If…?

Image via Marvel Studios

What If…? introduces a variant of Peggy who took the Super-Soldier serum instead of Steve, becoming Captain Carter and defeating the Red Skull herself. Captain Carter later aided the Watcher’s Guardians of the Multiverse in defeating Infinity Ultron’s bid to conquer all reality. Following her Doctor Strange 2 appearance, she will return in season two. A Captain Carter comic book series is also ongoing.

Don’t miss Captain Carter’s cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, in theaters from May 6.

Johnny Depp’s manager describes Amber Heard op-ed at center of lawsuit ‘catastrophic’

Johnny Depp’s manager describes Amber Heard op-ed at center of lawsuit ‘catastrophic’

Johnny Depp’s agent claims an op-ed penned by ex-wife Amber Heard, at the center of a trial of dueling defamation lawsuits, was “catastrophic” to the Pirates of the Caribbean actor’s career.

Depp is suing Aquaman star Heard for $50 million for alleged false domestic abuse claims she made against him that he says hurt his career. Heard is counter-suing Depp, also for defamation, for $100 million.

Heard’s 2018 op-ed for the Washington Post, where she describes herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse,”  is at the center of Depp’s lawsuit. Heard doesn’t name Depp in the article, but Depp claims the piece nevertheless implied him as the abuser.

According to Jack Whigham, Depp’s agent, the op-ed’s publication coincided with Depp losing a $23 million Pirates sequel deal from Disney, he asserted during testimony in the Fairfax, Virginia courtroom, Associated Press reported.

Also relevant to the discussion overall is the fact that Heard made initial abuse allegations in 2016, something Depp’s lawyers say was clearly referenced in the 2018 op-ed. However, Depp was still able to work after 2016, including in multi-million-dollar roles in City of Lies, Murder on the Orient Express, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindlewald. All those films were produced in 2017, under contracts reached before any allegations were made against Depp.

However, after the 2018 op-ed is when the calls stopped coming in, Whigham testified, calling the article “extremely impactful” due to it being a first-person account.

Whigham maintained a sixth Pirates film was scuttled as a result, after a prior verbal agreement with Disney was made. When grilled under cross-examination about whether the Pirates deal went under prior to the op-ed, Whigham admitted nothing had been written on paper for such a deal.

Heard’s lawyers have argued other factors, not related to the op-ed, are what damaged Depp’s reputation, such as reports of heavy drug and alcohol use, a lawsuit from someone who said Depp punched him on a movie set, and Depp’s separate libel lawsuit in London against newspaper The Sun — which he ultimately lost.

Since the lawsuit Depp is currently leveling against Heard is about the 2018 op-ed, his team must show that the article, specifically — and not the prior 2016 allegations against him by Heard — is what damaged his career.

An intellectual property expert also testified about the turn of Depp’s reputation from positive to negative, saying the biggest negative spike occurred after the 2016 abuse allegations. But the data he used, from Google search trend lines, showed that negative spikes after the Post article were relatively negligible, in comparison, the AP report stated.

It’s obvious the trial itself has caused a reputational hit for Heard, as well, as evidenced by a report that she fired her public relations team because of all the bad press, and a petition to get her removed from Aquaman 2 that surpassed three million signatures this week.

Heard has maintained that Depp physically abused her, while Depp states just the opposite: she was the one who abused him, not the other way around.

Last week, Depp wrapped up his four-day-long testimony. Heard is expected to take the stand, as well, sometime this week.

The 10 best Nintendo Wii games, ranked

The Wii console was a breath of fresh air when Nintendo launched it in 2006. The video game giant’s commitment to bucking the trend had been clear for years, but its previous console, the GameCube, hadn’t paid off. Despite its cute design and emphasis on fun, its unique game discs and lack of online multiplayer meant that it struggled against Microsoft and Sony. It was tough going head-to-head with the phenomenally successful PlayStation 2, and GameCube was also hit by a recurrent Nintendo problem: too few games. With Wii, Nintendo’s instinct returned, and it got the contrary bit right.

Wii’s motion controls and emphasis on varied gameplay appealed to all types of gamers and caught rivals by surprise. Its name was odd but straightforward. The inclusion of Miis from the start predicted social moves and it served up gaming moments that were far more varied and fun than many high-performance battles on PlayStation or Xbox.

Wii was an accessible console, and its games reflected its broad appeal. Alongside impressive ports that made great use of its remote and nunchuck controls ⏤ like Okami and Resident Evil 4 ⏤ were innovative games that could only have sprung up on this console. Sony and Microsoft tried to catch up, bringing out their Kinect and Playstation Move add-ons in response. But those always felt like add-ons, while Wii was well-realized from the start. That helped Nintendo’s console storm ahead, beating Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 with 101 million units sold and setting the agenda for consoles to come.

What were the best games on Nintendo’s innovative console? If you’re dusting off the console and ensuring your remote wrist-strap is attached, we’ve ranked the 10 best games released on Nintendo Wii.

10. Xenoblade Chronicles

This is the groundbreaking RPG that Wii owners needed. Xenoblade Chronicles’ complex role-playing game was spun from the Xeno series but not bound by its continuity. Its sci-fi-fantasy was captured in two interlocked worlds built from the bodies of two warring titans — an open world that set a new bar for RPGs. Protagonist Shulk and the mystical blade Monado have become a regular on Super Smash updates. One minus was the slightly disappointing graphics supported by Wii’s hardware, but if you want to catch up, a remastered remake was released on Switch in 2020.

9. Wii Sports

This is the launch title that the console needed. While plenty of variations followed, the pure joy of Wii Sports’ games remains. It featured five sports ⏤ tennis, baseball, bowling, golf, and boxing ⏤ each simplified so gamers, whether new or experienced, could pick up the controls and play immediately. There were hints of the fitness potential of consoles, with different modes that could monitor players’ progress in each sport. Most of all, Wii Sports demonstrated the easy, brilliant, and fun free-for-all video gaming should be.

8. Rock Band 2

Released in 2008, Rock Band built on its predecessor in every way. It may have been released on Xbox 360 first, but Wii’s affinity for peripherals and motion controls was where it came into its own. 84 master recordings in-box and additional downloadable content kept the challenge alive. The format was reassuringly familiar, with up to four players mimicking the performance of popular songs, using controllers, or their voices, in place of musical instruments. It may have tweaked and refined the format rather than presenting a new game, but adding a No-Fail option opened the game up to various skill levels.

7. No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle

Travis Touchdown’s meta and irreverent approach to video games stood out. Two installments brought the action-adventure, hack and slash gaming, and surreal humor Wii needed. After assassin Travis sailed through the first game’s ranked battles, his Desperate Struggle brought a more refined experience. While the combat remained similar ⏤ slash, wrestle, and deathblow ⏤ alongside new playable characters, Travis could switch between beam katanas mid-battle. Ad in free-to-enter ranked battles and gamers enjoyed more variety and faster progression. That said, none of this bizarre adventure could be missed, including its 8-bit style mini-games. Desperate Struggle was one of Wii’s wildest moments.

6. MadWorld

MadWorld arrived with a distinctive splash of gore, but it didn’t achieve the sales it deserved despite the hype. Its concept was simple – a dystopian beat-’em-up, where players guided Jack through the satirical DeathWatch TV show. It’s Running Man without the yellow jumpsuit, but with gorgeous black and white visuals only interrupted by the frequent blood splatters. It didn’t make the most precise use of the Wii controls, but the repetitive gameplay and darkly inspired violence was as engrossing as it was gross. It was a bit short, and it’s difficult to argue that there was more substance than style, but it stood up to repeat play.

5. Metroid Prime Trilogy

It’s tough to edge out Metroid Prime Echoes — which could have made this list on its own — but the whole trilogy is a phenomenal achievement, and Wii is where it came together. Adding motion controls to the GameCube original created the definite version of Metroid Prime. Despite first impressions, Prime’s trick was that it wasn’t a first-person shooter (FPS). It was an action-adventure game that just happened to be framed in 3D first-person — except when it switched to third-person for Samus Aran’s classic Morph Ball mode. Prime released FPS from its tunnel vision, fusing it with the platformer’s legacy of puzzle-solving and exploration. Every element clicked, from impressive graphics to immersive atmosphere and stunning level design. We can cheat with the whole Trilogy because Samus gave us the okay.

4. Kirby’s Epic Yarn

Kirby sprang onto Nintendo in 1992, the year Mortal Kombat and Wolfenstein 3D brought the wrong kind of attention to video games. Jump forward 18 years, and Kirby was still riding high, still cute, and buoyed by a diverse string of games. Kirby had been away from home consoles for seven years but returned on a quest to find seven pieces of magic yarn in an environment entirely assembled from cloth and textiles. Most revolutionary was banning Kirby from flying or inhaling. Instead, the pink hero morphed into different objects throughout the side-scrolling platformer. The gameplay worked, ahem, seamlessly with the visuals and crafted one of Wii’s most accessible titles. A bit easy for some gamers, but among the most distracting hours you could spend on the console.

3. Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Brawl’s canvas was bigger, but it retained the Super Smash twist on traditional fighters. It wasn’t about knockouts, but rather the frantic fun of the Nintendo family coming together to knock each other off-screen, and this time playable third-party characters were invited. Brawl shone a new light on characters and paid tribute to generations of video games. A highlight was a stunning score that features nearly 40 video game composers. Innovation and heritage were also evident in Brawl’s controller mechanics – players could simultaneously use the Wii Remote, Wii Remote with Nunchuk, GameCube controller, and Classic Controller. While it strained the hardware a bit ⏤ those pesky loading times should have been knocked off a ledge ⏤ it was surprisingly deep, dynamic, and probably the best combination of fun and challenge on Wii.

2. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

The Wii launched with Twilight Princess, a divisive entry in the Zelda franchise, not least because it fell between GameCube’s demise and Wii’s launch. Skyward Sword was a wholly different adventure. Jumping back to the beginning of the Zelda saga, it had color, brightness, and giant Loftwing birds. After the franchise had taken Link onto the oceans and railways of Hyrule, Skyward Sword let him soar through the sky above it. The gorgeous art style that pushed the hardware was inspired by Impressionist and post-Impressionist painters. On the ground, Skyward Sword was a familiar blend of quest and dungeon-based puzzles. In combat, it used the Wii MotionPlus enhanced controller for more realistic hacks and blocks. The technology proved challenging for developers and divisive for gamers. Still, many thought this epic game set a new bar while paying tribute to Zelda traditions. Flying from Skyloft on the back of a Loftwing was one of Wii’s great experiences.

1. Super Mario Galaxy 2

It had been a while since a console-headlining Mario game earned a sequel. Galaxy 2 improved on its Wii predecessor in every way ⏤ the only reason that stunning game doesn’t make this list. Not bad for a sequel initially developed as Super Mario Galaxy More ⏤ a mere update to the original. Fortunately, Nintendo EAD Tokyo realized the potential and unleashed its imagination (and Yoshi). Galaxy 2 couldn’t move too far from its predecessor, but it took a bolder and more confident approach to galactic gameplay. It embraced the game’s out-of-this-world weirdness with many ideas that could have stood as games in their own rights. Galaxy 2 cranked up the difficulty, which put some players off, but remained more accessible than the infuriating heights of Mario’s early years. It’s no wonder that Wii’s finest moment sold over seven million copies.

PlayStation soon to go on a studio acquisition spree

PlayStation soon to go on a studio acquisition spree

These days, it almost feels as though we hear more acquisition news in the gaming industry than we hear of the games themselves. Following Microsoft’s industry-shattering bids to acquire Bethesda Softworks and Activision Blizzard, among a number of other studios, Sony retaliated in kind by taking a few prized developers for the PlayStation family. Now, after securing a deal to buy Destiny creator Bungie, the Japanese media juggernaut is looking to up its acquisition game by hiring a specialist just like Team Xbox did a while ago.

According to a new job listing by Sony Interactive Entertainment, the company is looking to hire a Director of Corporate Development whose responsibilities include “identifying inorganic growth opportunities through acquisitions, investments or joint ventures.” Sony is looking for people who can not only identify such buyout opportunities, but also help integrate the newcomers into the PlayStation Studios workplace culture in an effort to “drive significant long-term value for the company.”

It seems that PlayStation is not done shopping for new studios by a long shot. Only today, we heard that Square Enix has sold its western studios and several of its IPs to Embracer Group for a meager $300 million, and some industry commentators like Jeff Grubb seem to think the Japanese distributor itself is now up for grabs after getting rid of its costly developers.

After fighting Vivendi for years, Ubisoft has also openly expressed interest in becoming a subsidiary of another industry giant, so Sony will have no shortage of pickings to choose from and add to the PlayStation family in the near future.

Watch: HBO Max unveils ‘George Carlin’s American Dream’ from Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio

Watch: HBO Max unveils ‘George Carlin’s American Dream’ from Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio

The life of a legendary comedian is being explored in an upcoming documentary for HBO, George Carlin’s American Dream, which has just dropped its first trailer.

The two-part documentary will explore Carlin’s tumultuous life, enduring legacy, and influence on the comedy scene, from two Emmy-winners at the helm as co-directors, Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio, a WarnerMedia press release stated.

The two-part event, coming to the premium cable network and its accompanying streaming service, HBO Max, later this month, will chronicle Carlin’s life and work as the so-called “dean of counterculture comedians.” With a career spanning half a century, Carlin headlined a jaw-dropping 14 HBO comedy specials, made over 130 appearances on The Tonight Show, and constantly reinvented his on-stage persona right up until his passing in 2008. His work carries prophetic power even after his death, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential comedians of all time.

Tracking Carlin’s rise to fame through an intimate personal portrait, including his childhood growing up in New York City, and struggles with drugs throughout his life, the film includes interviews with those who were close to him, including friends and family. This includes an interview with Kelly Carlin, the daughter of the comedian he had with his first wife of 36 years, Brenda.

It will also include interviews with Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Patton Oswalt, Stephen Colbert, Bill Burr, Bette Midler, W. Kamau Bell, and many others, as well as never-before-seen archival material.

The first part of George Carlin’s American Dream comes to HBO May 20, with the subsequent episode debuting May 21. Both episodes will be available for stream on HBO Max beginning May 20.

Benedict Cumberbatch is over defending Doctor Strange’s ‘Spider-Man’ spell from criticism

Benedict Cumberbatch is over defending Doctor Strange’s ‘Spider-Man’ spell from criticism

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Stephen Strange is back for a new adventure Friday, and, ahead of this theatrical release, Cumberbatch says his spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home had the right idea behind it.

“He’s a human being, and I think it was a very human error. He saw Peter as a fellow foot soldier and then as a teenager going through a very formative experience of not being able to be his true self because of being exposed, and having lost a mentor, [Strange] decided to step in with a gesture of pretty good intention. People seemed to think, ‘well, it’s a very cavalier thing to do.’ I think the spell, on its own, might have been alright. Peter interrupts the spell many times, and that’s what corrupted it.”

“Peter, through the ability he has with his powers, affects the spell with his words. It’s not really Strange’s mistake. He’s right to want to help Peter. What kind of superhero would he be if he didn’t want to help another superhero? That’s questionable. I think somebody who cares about somebody can be forgiven for doing something that has consequences. A superhero can make some mistakes.”

Cumberbatch made the comments to The Hollywood Reporter. He also discusses his character, some of his decisions playing the role, and what it is like to work with Sam Raimi. Cumberbatch also says he does not think stimulants or intoxicants will end up impacting Strange after more time with his powers.

“I think you’re right that with time, certain medicines don’t touch the side. But you’ll have to wait and see. Maybe after this iteration of his story, he might need something a bit stiffer than a martini.”

The first Doctor Strange film is available on Disney Plus.

Fans react to ‘Fast X’ finding a director who can work with Vin Diesel

Fans react to ‘Fast X’ finding a director who can work with Vin Diesel

Louis Leterrier is set to direct Fast X, and fans are already speculating whether or not he’ll clash with Vin Diesel. Fast and Furious staple Justin Lin was supposed to direct the film, but he exited a week into production, with sources alleging that Diesel was the cause. Regardless of the sources’ veracity, the seed of rumor has germinated on Twitter with the following results:

Officially, Lin left on good terms due to creative differences, but the New York Daily News reported that those differences revolved around Diesel. The Fast and Furious star allegedly showed up to the set of the newest instalment late, out of shape, and without his lines memorized, resulting in Lin’s exit. This sent the production into a tailspin, with losses of $600,000 to $1 million per day, as a new director was sought.

Former Fast and Furious directors F. Gary Gray, David Leitch, and James Wan were all considered, but they had other obligations. In May 2022, Leterrier was announced as a frontrunner for the job, with outlets like Variety reporting that his succession is all but official.

Immediately after the announcement, film blogger Scott Wampler joked: “BREAKING: Louis Leterrier has dropped out of directing FAST X after spending 8 minutes on set.” So far so good for the French director of movies like The Incredible Hulk and Clash of the Titans, but Wampler and other fans aren’t optimistic.

Lin is still credited as a writer and producer of Fast X, which is scheduled for release in May 2023 (barring other setbacks).

5 Letter Words with R, S, and O in Them – Wordle Game Help

5 Letter Words with R, S, and O in Them – Wordle Game Help

Mission Impossible features some astonishing action sequences and stunts that make the heists so interesting, but they’d be much more interesting if Tom Cruise played Wordle while dangling from a wire.

Wordle is continuing its military junta-like control of the internet, with the browser-based web game a social media sensation still. Comparing and contrasting scores has become part of the daily tradition of being online in 2022.

The puzzle aspect is always tough, and with just six guesses to get the word right, you may need a few gentle tips and hints. There’s no shame in needing support, and here’s some aid for those in Wordle need.

5 Letter Words with R, S, and O in Them

With 363 words that fit the criteria, there’s plenty of scope for blind guesses.

  • arson
  • boars
  • brows
  • dorks
  • fords
  • frogs
  • gorps
  • hours
  • irons
  • ogres
  • orcas
  • ports
  • prose
  • pyros
  • roams
  • roast
  • rosin
  • saros
  • score
  • servo
  • sorry
  • store
  • story
  • visor
  • words
  • zeros

A good way of looking at this combination is to allow yourself to do one letter at a time, or pitch “O” as the middle letter. A majority of these combinations have “O” at second or third letter.

It’s always good practise to evolve your vocabulary as much as you can, as it will put you in good stead for future Wordle puzzles.
