How historically accurate is Ridley Scott’s ‘Napoleon?’

How historically accurate is Ridley Scott’s ‘Napoleon?’

Critics are having a field day with Napoleon, and bringing the brunt of their analytical prowess to bear on Ridley Scott and Joaquin Phoenix’s new creation. It seems that when taken at face value, nothing is quite as riveting as reading the history of the late 17th and 18th centuries, but all the excitement of real-life events can’t keep up with the requirements of the cinematic medium, culminating in yet another historical Ridley Scott rollercoaster where the natural filmmaking inclination for dramatization overpowers the need for authenticity.

And sure, when you look at Scott’s back catalogue, none of those earlier movies adhered to real history, whether it be Gladiator’s the Roman Empire or Robin Hood dealing with the mythic figure of Sherwood Forest. On the flip side, many cinemagoers seem to believe that a historical movie centering around the life of a real person — and one as prominent as Napoleon — should actually take care not to misrepresent the reality of what went down. At least not too much.

So, whether you find yourself on the side of Ridley Scott admirers, or those historians currently lambasting his latest undertaking, we’ve decided to break down everything you need to know about Napoleon and its truthfulness to history, starting with the man himself.

Is Joaquin Phoenix’s Napoleon true to the real generalissimo?

The Emperor Napoleon in His Study at the Tuileries by Jacques-Louis David

The first thing historians and those with a keen interest in Napoleon Bonaparte’s life will realize about Ridley Scott’s film is the eccentric portrayal of the titular character by Joaquin Phoenix. While the real-world Napoleon was said to be cunning, witty, brilliant, and self-confident, the film version can come off as unsettlingly erratic.

There’s this great debate about where you could rank Napoleon in the list of history’s most vicious killers. Some make Napoleon out to be a great tyrant. Many even compare him to Hitler. But however one approaches the problem of the millions of people he killed, inadvertently or otherwise, during his ambitious political career, one shouldn’t forget that Napoleon was also a great purveyor of the Enlightenment.

After taking power and becoming the so-called “First Consul” of the newly instated republic, Napoleon used his absolute power to bring about a lot of non-military amendments, including the establishment of the Bank of France and the Civil Code of the French, which saved the country from a period of impoverishment and essentially put an end to the aftershocks of the Reign of Terror. (Though the latter happened when Napoleon had taken the crown and proclaimed himself Emperor.)

Ridley Scott’s movie only focuses on Napoleon’s military achievements, which undermines many major aspects of his character. When watching the new flick, it’s not so difficult to draw up the same misguided comparisons to Hitler, but while Napoleon was certainly ambitious and egotistic, he certainly didn’t kill as many people as Hitler did, in a bloodthirsty and genocidal rampage across Europe.

Last but not least, a reason for Napoleon’s unparalleled fame was the mind-numbing scope of his achievements at such a young age. Due to the general’s military genius and unmatched charisma, he managed to become the leader of the French armies and ultimately the de facto ruler of the entire nation by the age of 30. Unfortunately, Joaquin Phoenix was 47 when Ridley Scott began principal photography on Napoleon, so he doesn’t quite embody that zealous youth. This also complicates the matter of his wife Joséphine de Beauharnais, which is a whole different can of worms.

Is Joséphine depicted accurately?

Vanessa Kirby in Ridley Scott's 'Napoleon'
via Columbia Pictures

Joséphine’s portrayal is perhaps the most truthful out of all the characters who appear in this film. Vanessa Kirby does a wonderful job of portraying the mistress-turned-empress and perfectly captures her worldly demeanor. It’s also accurate that she cheated on Napoleon, but unlike what we see in the movie, the general didn’t leave his campaign in Egypt to rush back home and confront the scandal.

Vanessa Kirby is more than 10 years younger than Phoenix, so watching the two of them as Napoleon and Joséphine is almost like gazing into an alternate dimension where the roles have been reversed. The fact that Vanessa is much younger-looking doesn’t do any favors to her dominant role in that relationship, either.

Lastly, it should be noted that Napoleon didn’t slap Joséphine during their divorce. As historian Michael Broers explains it in blunt terms during an interview with Time, “It did not happen. Secondly, it’s out of character. He would never do a thing like that.”

The real world Joséphine was said to be ambitious and even power-hungry, attaching herself to powerful men to gain status. Napoleon, on the other hand, was completely besotted with her, so when the two realized that she couldn’t get with child, the Emperor had no choice but to let her go. One needn’t look any further than Napoleon’s alleged last words — “France, the Army, the Head of the Army, Joséphine” — to realize that he never stopped loving his former wife.

That said, Napoleon doesn’t escape Elba after hearing about Joséphine’s ailment, like in the movie. He learned about her death when still in exile, driving him to seclusion for a while.

Did Napoleon fire on the pyramids?

Nothing, no matter how absurd and unrealistic, will stop a filmmaker from shooting a scene he deems to be, so to speak, cool. The controversial pyramids scene in Napoleon unfortunately follows the same philosophy. As mentioned above, Napoleon didn’t leave Egypt because of Joséphine, but due to supply problems, and he almost certainly didn’t shoot at the Pyramids, being himself a patron of arts and history.

Besides, as historian Dan Snow explained after watching the movie’s trailer, it would be physically improbable, if not downright impossible, for those cannons to hit the top of the pyramids.

Did Napoleon really say that line to the British about their boats?

While Napoleon had ambitions to invade Britain and eventually conquer it, his defeat at the Battle of Trafalgar proved that there was no defeating the royal navy. As for the famous movie line, where Napoleon says to the British ambassador, “You think you’re so tough because you have boats,” well, those were not his exact words, but according to Broers, he said something very similar to that, and it is indeed based on a true encounter with the British spymaster William Wickham.

Marie Antoinette’s execution, the unexpected cannonball scene, and the meeting with the Duke of Wellington

Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte

Napoleon didn’t bear witness to Marie Antoinette’s execution, because at the time, he was garrisoned somewhere in the south. Napoleon did, however, see the king and his queen being thrown into jail in 1792, and that must have impacted him greatly. Ridley Scott is combining these two elements, and we’re willing to let it slide.

Another scene in Napoleon shows the titular protagonist reaching a hand inside his dead horse to retrieve the cannonball that killed him. According to Scott’s version, this was during the Siege of Toulon, which marked Napoleon’s first major military victory through unconventional strategy, ultimately contributing to his rise to fame and influence. Well, even if it’s true that Napoleon burned through a number of horses during his military campaigns, there’s no evidence for this gesture. And while the general sustained a leg injury from a nearby cannonball explosion on that fateful night, he pushed on and led his men to victory.

Ultimately, it should be noted that unlike the movie version, Napoleon and the Duke of Wellington never met after the Battle of Waterloo. Napoleon lost Waterloo due to strategic errors, and the tens of thousands of Prussian reinforcements that came to Wellington’s aid. Together, they dealt the ambitious Emperor of France his final defeat.

Napoleon spent his remaining days in exile on an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The movie depicts him writing his memoirs, known as Mémoires de Napoléon, which is in keeping with real history.

What does Ridley Scott have to say about these inaccuracies?

Ridley Scott directing 'The Last Duel'
Photo via 20th Century Studios

Scott doesn’t seem to care about all of these historical inaccuracies. When confronted by these critiques from historians and French reviewers, this is what the Alien director told The Times.

“Like all history, it’s been reported. Napoleon dies, then, 10 years later, someone writes a book,” he explained. “Then someone takes that book and writes another book and so, 400 years later there’s a lot of imagination.“When I have issues with historians, I ask: ‘Excuse me, mate, were you there? No? Well, shut the f**k up then.'”

We’re not sure if history works quite like that, as Andrew Roberts explains in a recent chat with Sky News. But I guess when all is said and done, this was Ridley Scott’s movie, and it would’ve reflected, one way or another, his particular creative vision for the character.

Latest Netflix News: Sofía Vergara’s prosthetic nose in ‘Griselda’ gives Bradley Cooper a run for his money, as newest from ‘Cobra Kai’ creators falls on its face

Today’s carefully assorted platter of Netflix news is heavy on the TV side of things, with updates from Sofía Vergara’s new Cocaine drug lord show, the second season of the best DC Comics show everyone forgets is actually DC Comics, and a raunchy action series from the makers of Cobra Kai.

What readers might not expect from a Netflix news round-up, however, is a trip to the world of gaming. We were just as surprised as you will be to hear that a massive gaming franchise is joining the TUDUM platform’s gaming catalog with three classic titles available to play without extra charge for all subscribers.

Sofia Vergara looks unrecognizable in the first official trailer for Netflix cartel drama Griselda

The first trailer for Griselda, the Netflix mini-series about the infamous Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco, dropped Thursday, revealing a completely transformed Sofía Vergara in what is her biggest role since Modern Family. “Quinnpin. Innovator. Mother. Killer. Griselda,” the trailer flashes in big bold letters, just as big and bold as the show’s protagonist.

The 6-episode-long series from the creators of Narcos and Narcos: Mexico Doug Miro and Eric Newman, has a release date set for January 25 on Netflix. Miro wrote all six episodes, while Andrés Baiz, who also worked on the duo’s two cartel-world shows, comes back to direct. Vergara is a producer in addition to her starring role, and will share the screen with Martín Rodríguez, Rosa Ochoa, Desiree Alexandra Estrada, Juliana Aidén Martinez, and a number of other actors.

The Sandman author Neil Gaiman announced Thursday that the second season of the live-action adaptation of his comic book series was resuming filming after it had been halted by the Writers and Actors strikes. Gaiman praised “genius” showrunner Allan Heinberg for his vision for the show and teased new settings for the upcoming season, including Ancient Greece and revolutionary France.

The first season was a huge hit on Netflix in 2022, receiving praise for successfully adapting the notoriously tricky source material, and topping the Nielsen streaming charts. The Sandman follows Morpheus, who is the personification of dreams and also known as Dream, after he breaks free from captivity and attempts to restore his powers. Season 2 has not been given an official release date by Netflix yet.

Netflix users can pre-register now.

New show from Cobra Kai creators, Obliterated, fails to impress in early reviews

Obliterated, an action dramedy by Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, arrived Thursday on Netflix and despite its best attempts, it didn’t quite hit the spot for critics. The 8-season-long series follows a seven-member elite force tasked with stopping a terrorist attack in Las Vegas, but the real threat comes after they’re all too drunk and high from celebrating their first big win to stop a second threat.

The Hollywood Reporter‘s Daniel Fienberg calls the show “rambling and digressive,” critiquing its dragged-out jokes and lengthy fight sequences, while Aramide Tinubu of Variety bashes Obliterated as a “nearly unwatchable hodgepodge of nonsense littered with penises and explosives.” In fairness, we do have a feeling that Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald will take that as a compliment. It’s not all bad, though. For Collider, Nate Richard highlights the first four episodes of the season as “a lot of fun,” despite it “peaking too soon” and dragging in the end stretch. Still, knowing Netflix users, poor reviews won’t stop them from making this sausage bomb fest a Top 10 resident.

On top of that, why exactly is a masked madman killing these students during the most beautiful time of the year anyway?

You’ll have to watch Black Christmas and find out, and it’s a must-watch if you’ve not seen it yet — or even if you have. While we love an excellent light-hearted festive movie, we can’t get enough of holiday horror either.

Who is Azazel in the Marvel comics and how is he related to Nightcrawler?

Who is Azazel in the Marvel comics and how is he related to Nightcrawler?

Let’s face it, the X-Men universe is one giant superpowered soap opera, with countless characters related to each other in various confusing and contradictory ways. Mystique is Charles Xavier’s adoptive sibling in the movies, but in the comics it’s Juggernaut. The list goes on.

The complicated connection between Azazel and Nightcrawler is another such case that requires an exceptional understanding in X-Men-ology to fully comprehend. Once again, the story was slightly different in the 20th Century Fox films than in the comics, and now things are even more perplexing after a major retcon to Nightcrawler’s origins in a new comic release.

But first, who is this Azazel anyhow?

Azazel, Mystique, and Nightcrawler’s traditional connection, explained

Azazel in X-Men: First Class/Nightcrawler in X-Men: Apocalypse/Mystique in X-Men: Days of Future Past
Images via 20th Century Fox

In the comics, Azazel is one of the oldest living mutants around. The leader of the Neyaphem, an ancient order of mutants who have demonic appearances, Azazel is recognizable for his traditional Satanic image, including red skin and arrow-tipped tail. His primary mutant power is his teleportation abilities. Oh, and he’s Nightcrawler’s biological father, with the X-Men member being the product of an affair with Mystique.

The shapeshifting Raven Darkholme once lived as the wife of a wealthy German lord, Baron Christian Wagner, but he could not conceive a child. Mystique proceeded to take lovers in order to produce an heir for the baron, and she embarked on a passionate affair with Azazel, who was posing as Wagner’s business associate. Once her husband discovered her infidelity upon the birth of her blue-skinned baby boy, Raven killed the Baron, fleeing his castle and abandoning Nightcrawler, who goes on to grow up in the circus.

Azazel appeared in Fox’s universe in X-Men: First Class, in which he was portrayed by Jason Flemyng as a Russian mutant and member of the Hellfire Club, the right-hand man to Sebastian Shaw. In Days of Future Past, it’s revealed that he is one of many mutants who was experimented on and murdered by Bolivar Trask as he attempted to develop his Sentinels.

Although Mystique and Azazel were never confirmed to be Kurt’s parents in the films, the fact the two served together in the Hellfire Club left it open to the imagination for a love affair to have taken place prior to his death. Plus, Raven rescues Nightcrawler from a cage match at the beginning of X-Men: Apocalypse.

How Azazel’s relationship to Nightcrawler was just changed forever

Mystique Marvel Comics

X-Men Blue: Origins, from writer Si Spurrier and artist Wilton Santos, rips up the rulebook for Nightcrawler’s backstory and retcons the circumstances of Kurt Wagner’s birth, although he still does have an intrinsic connection to Azazel — just not in any direct way.

It turns out that Azazel isn’t Nightcrawler’s father… Mystique is! If this doesn’t make any sense to you, remember that Raven is a shapeshifter and can take on female and male forms. So when she conceived Kurt, she rewrote her entire biological make-up, using Azazel’s DNA as a template. So, yes, Azazel is still technically Nightcrawler’s father on a genetic level.

OK, so why did Mystique use Azazel’s DNA to produce a child? That’s quite the tale

When living as Baroness Wagner, Raven got her on/off-again wife Destiny a place in the household so they could continue their relationship. However, things took a dramatic turn when the precognitive Destiny received a vision of Azazel conquering the Earth. The only way to avert this future, Destiny saw, was if he was distracted by the knowledge that he had a son. Thus, the pair conceived Kurt.

In order to hide the truth, Mystique then augmented her natural physical form to appear pregnant, thereby explaining prior flashbacks, and acted as if she was in love with Azazel and carrying his baby. In truth, however, Destiny was carrying Kurt. In order to fulfill the specific parameters of the prophecy, the couple had to abandon their child, as it was fated that he had to suffer in order to derail his “father”‘s reign of terror.

Is ‘Godzilla Minus One’ a prequel or a sequel? Its MonsterVerse connections, explained

Now is a good time to be a Godzilla fan. Not only is Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the first TV spinoff of Legendary’s MonsterVerse, unfolding weekly on Apple TV Plus, Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire is set to hit theaters in spring 2024. In addition, Godzilla Minus One opens in limited theaters in the U.S. this winter.

But what is Godzilla Minus One, apart from being the 37th movie based on the King of Monsters ever made and featuring a redesign of the titular kaiju that comes heartily recommended by Guillermo del Toro? Is it a prequel, remake, or reboot of an earlier film and does it have any connections to the MonsterVerse?

Godzilla Minus One‘s complex connections to the franchise, explained

Simply put, Godzilla Minus One is not a part of Legendary’s MonsterVerse. As a Japanese production, it is the latest in the long and illustrious line of original Godzilla movies from Toho, the studio that created the character back in 1954’s original Godzilla film. As for how Minus One connects to the Toho series, that takes a bit of explaining.

No, Minus One isn’t a reboot, a remake, or even a straight-up sequel or prequel, but it does have significant connections to the first Godzilla from director Ishirō Honda. The best way of describing it is as a sister film, or “sidequel,” to the original. Set in the 1940s, the new film returns to a period setting, in contrast to the tradition of bringing Godzilla into the modern-day, and in doing so tells a fresh story that restarts the franchise as well as tipping its hat to the past.

Following Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), a former kamikaze pilot suffering from survivor’s guilt as he returns home to Tokyo after the end of World War Two, Minus One is directly revisiting the themes of Honda’s original film by exploring post-war Japan. What’s more, its storyline can be viewed as slotting in between or alongside the narrative of the 1954 movie. In essence, it is a reboot, but one that honors the continuity and spirit of what’s come before.

Receiving critical acclaim, Godzilla Minus One is releasing in over 1,000 theaters across North America from Dec. 1.

‘It’s time to make a good Marvel movie’: ‘Thunderbolts’ star throwing the rest of the MCU under the bus hints at how it’s going to fix the Multiverse Saga

‘It’s time to make a good Marvel movie’: ‘Thunderbolts’ star throwing the rest of the MCU under the bus hints at how it’s going to fix the Multiverse Saga

Wyatt Russell wants you to know his upcoming MCU film, Thunderbolts, won’t follow on from the franchise’s recent string of flops, and although he’s not telling us why he’s so confident, maybe there are some hints at the movie’s direction hidden in his words.

While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the U.S. Agent star — who joined the MCU as wayward Steve Rogers replacement John Walker in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier — admitted that everyone’s “on this Marvel train right now of things not going so well,” but he’s confident that Thunderbolts will change all that when it eventually emerges in summer 2025.

“But it’s not a straightforward Marvel movie as you’ve seen in the past. I think that it’s gonna be a lot of fun but I think it will be something that hopefully Marvel fans will look at and go, ‘Oh OK, this is a little different, let’s go hard at it.’ And as far as how we are approaching it, it’s time to go to work a little bit, it’s time to make a good Marvel movie so let’s do that and work hard at it and don’t take things for granted.”

In this, Russell is echoing very similar comments made by director Jake Schreier, who has teased that it offers “a very new take” on the superhero team-up genre and that the story will have “a very different angle.” So what is it about Thunderbolts that’s causing its cast and crew to make such bold claims?

Thunderbolts could finally deliver what the Multiverse Saga has tried — and failed — to do three times

The cast of Marvel's 'Thunderbolts'
Photo via Marvel Studios

As a reminder, Thunderbolts sees a group of the MCU’s villains and anti-heroes brought together, as led by Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova. In many ways, then, it serves as a sequel to both the aforementioned Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Black Widow. And therein likely lies the key to what makes Thunderbolts so different from other recent Marvel outings, and how it could hold the key to fixing the Multiverse Saga.

Outside of Loki season 2, it’s clear that the more far-fetched, fantastical elements of this current saga just aren’t doing it for audiences, as both Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels were cast out into the cold. Unfortunately, Marvel’s recent attempts to offer a more grounded alternative have also failed to capitalize on the admiration for earlier such projects, like Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Black Widow and TFATWS were both only tepidly received and the less said about Secret Invasion the better.

With Russell and Schreier promising something that might be “fun” but will mostly be “different,” presumably they are indicating that Thunderbolts won’t share the goofy and cosmic tone of many contemporary MCU projects. Taking the film in this route would also be a clever way of distancing Thunderbolts from any comparisons to DC’s similarly themed Suicide Squad series. Don’t expect Bucky and Yelena’s team to do battle with gyrating Enchantresses and giant squid monsters.

The Thunderbolts cast and crew are making some lofty claims, but hopefully their words will prove well-founded once the movie premieres as the second entry in Phase Six on July 25, 2025.

Why did CBS pay a knockout sum to Sylvester Stallone to air the ‘Rocky’ movies in the 1980’s?

On Sunday night February 4, 1979, the original Rocky film made its small screen premiere. Nearly three years after it stunned audiences in the summer of ‘76, Rocky was finally heading home — or more accurately, heading directly into everybody’s home.

CBS had paid an unreported sum for that highly-anticipated premiere, which was written about in newspapers across the country for weeks leading up to it. Of course, in 1979 there was no streaming services or DVDs, and even VCRs were too new — and thus too expensive — to end up in most people’s homes. That would change over the following several years, and cable television was also soon about to make a major impact on what people could watch, but in 1979 the three major networks (CBS, NBC, and ABC) throughly dominated the home-watching landscape.

Rocky, an underdog hit in theaters, became an unsurprising hit on television. Over 27 million homes tuned in that Sunday night to watch the Oscar-winning film. It was a major ratings success, earning a 36.9 Nielsen rating. It wasn’t a “Who shot J.R.?” moment in television history, but the Super Bowl, an absolute annual ratings bonanza, aired live two weeks earlier on NBC, and earned a 47.1 rating. That means the ratings for Rocky earned 78% as much as the Super Bowl, something that will likely not even come close to happening today.

It was also perfect timing for Sylvester Stallone and distributor United Artists, because it drummed up further interest in the sequel, Rocky II, which would premiere in movie theaters just a few months later.

Of course, Rocky II was a major box office smash as well. So, in 1980, United Artists and CBS struck a deal which gave CBS the rights to air the sequel also. That deal was for a reported $23 million dollars.

To put that into perspective, it was more money than any network paid for rights to air a film at the time. ABC had just paid $12 million to air Alien. NBC had just paid $21 million dollars to air the classic The Sound of Music, which was a guaranteed ratings success then.

Burt Young, who played Paulie in the Rocky series, confirmed the deal to United Press International writer Vernon Scott. Young told him that he received a percentage of that and also added, “There’s big money involved.”

Burt Young quote from Vernon Scott interview in Feb 1980 / screenshot via newspapers.com

One can obviously determine that Sylvester Stallone was paid a much higher percentage than Young, and that it’s not out of the question that it could have been as much as six figures — but it didn’t end there.

Rocky III became an even bigger film. It showcased television star Mr. T. and wrestling star Hulk Hogan. CBS likely thought it would be foolish to not pay for the rights to air that movie also. So, they didn’t wait this time, especially considering that Rocky III was clearly on its way to being the biggest financial success of all the films in the series.

While it was dominating the summer box office in 1982, CBS struck a deal to pay $15 million for the rights to air the film 5 times beginning in 1984. CBS had already aired the original Rocky twice, and had two more airings left, per their contract. They also had three more airings of Rocky II available, which had just aired on a Sunday night, and was actually beaten out in the ratings by Smokey and the Bandit. This made some critics question why CBS was paying so much money for the Rocky series, which totaled around $40 million dollars when you consider $15 million for Rocky III, $23 million for Rocky II, and one can safely assume at least $2 million for Rocky.

Why was CBS so obsessed with Rocky and was it all worth it in the end?

Well, no one really knows, not even CBS. The television premiere’s of the respective films possibly made it worth it. They couldn’t expect the additional airings to result in the same ratings success. CBS paid $8 million dollars less for Rocky III than for Rocky II (and for one additional showing) so it’s not as if CBS didn’t significantly lower their offer. They also intended to make the films something of a tradition, though they ended up airing them sporadically throughout the rest of the decade.

CBS also understood what was happening in the movie industry as blockbusters were becoming more commonplace because studios were willing to invest more in one movie than ever before. It also meant that most studios were punching out fewer total movies. So, CBS knew fewer options would be available each year. They also wanted to capitalize on the Rocky films by creating a new boxing drama. Indeed, they promoted it during their 1980 airing of Rocky II but watched the drama, called The Contender, bomb when it began airing in April of that year.

CBS commercial for multiple shows including The Contender

The Rocky deals certainly kept expanding the wallets of Burt Young, Talia Shire, Burgess Meredith, Carl Weathers, and Sly Stallone. However, with the rise of HBO and cable television, VCR’s and VHS rentals, and other broadcast networks such as FOX, then such massive deals would not be made again.

It also means that the long term Rocky deal was lacking in foresight, especially considering that 20th Century Fox had the rights to distribute Rocky on VHS in 1980. However, two years later, CBS merged with Fox’s VHS division and distributed the Rocky films under CBS/Fox Video. Rocky III became such a money-making VHS that it finished in the top five of both rentals and buys in 1983. So, maybe CBS made out quite well with the Rocky series overall.

The true winner was Sylvester Stallone, making tons of money in all the deals without doing more work.

Sly and the family Rocky made out like Smokey and the Bandit thanks to perfect timing, perfect circumstances, and dare I say a perfect movie series.

The early 1980’s were a peak time of movie blockbusters on network television and such a time will likely never happen again.

What have Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson said about returning to the MCU?

What have Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson said about returning to the MCU?

With Marvel in desperate need of a burst of renewed interest and energy, MCU fans are increasingly sounding like the Watcher as they ponder the question… What if the OG Avengers returned?

While Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, Jeremy Renner’s Hakweye, and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor are all still knocking around the universe, Avengers: Endgame memorably — and heartbreakingly — wrote Iron Man, Steve Rogers’ Captain America, and Black Widow out of the franchise. At the time this seemed like the right move, so as to allow the next generation of heroes to take up the baton.

However, four years later, with the MCU seemingly having lost the clout and box office power it once possessed, there’s growing talk (started by a tell-all report from Variety) that Marvel might be thinking about breaking its bank in order to convince Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson to reprise their beloved roles. Kevin Feige himself has denied it, but that man has more secrets than Nick Fury.

So what have the stars themselves said on the matter? Here’s Downey, Evans, and ScarJo’s most recent comments on a potential Marvel return.

Chris Evans

Appearing on Nov. 28, 2023’s edition of The View, Evans was fielded with the inevitable question about a Captain America comeback. Fans who’ve kept up with his responses to these queries ever since Endgame came out won’t be surprised by his words. By the sounds of it, he’s not ruling the possibility out, but it’s not like he’s in a hurry to steal back his star-spangled shield from Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. We do have Captain America: Brave New World coming in February 2025, after all.

“You know, I always see those reports too, and it’s news to me,” Evans told The View. “I think every couple months, someone says that they’re getting Downey, and Hemsworth, and Scarlett, and everyone’s coming back! No one’s spoken to me about it. And look, I would never say never, but I really — I’m very protective. It’s a very precious role to me, so it would have to be just right.”

Scarlett Johansson

On Nov. 14, 2023, Scarlett Johansson raised eyebrows with an even more evasive response to her Marvel future than Evans’. The Black Widow star joked during an appearance on TODAY that they only way she could return as the late Natasha Romanoff would be by supernatural means.

“I feel like that’s kind of the end, right?” she remarked. “Like can you come back? Could it be a vampire version of the character? Cause I’m here for that, like a zombie version, maybe.”

Johansson then got into a teasing back-and-forth with host Al Roker, in which she heavily suggested there might be something she’s keeping under her hat.

“You really ask the hard questions. I feel like I have to tell you, but I actually don’t have to tell you, Al. I do not, but I want to so bad!”

It’s a fact that Johansson is working with Marvel as a producer on an unknown, upcoming project, so she’s probably the most likely to return of this trio.

Robert Downey Jr.

As for the least likely to return, that has to be Robert Downey Jr. As the daddy of the MCU, Tony Stark’s demise in Avengers: Endgame really wrapped up the Infinity Saga in a bow and acted as the perfect farewell to Downey’s time in the franchise. Naturally, then, he has been largely dismissive about the idea of suiting up as the Armored Avenger once more in the years since.

Downey’s definitive comment on the subject came from a Jan. 15, 2020 interview on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. “There would have to be a super compelling argument and a series of events that made it obvious,” he stressed about working with Marvel again. “But the other thing is, I wanna do other stuff.”

Similarly, Marvel Studios producer Stephen Broussard confirmed to Gizmodo in February 2023 that future appearances from Downey were “no longer [on] the table,” which indicated that the actor had privately told the studio he’s closed the door on Iron Man for good.

All in all, ScarJo? Possibly. Evans? An outside chance, but it could happen under the right circumstances. Downey? Yeah, don’t count on it. And yet, this is the MCU, where anything can happen, and something drastic definitely needs to happen, so these Avengers might yet reassemble one day after all.

All the must-see Hallmark Original Christmas movies coming December 2023

Hallmark Cards Inc. has always been in the business of Christmas, with their Keepsake Ornament collections, let alone their stake in holiday cards and wrapping paper. So while the Hallmark Channel was a weird move, we could see Hallmark Original Christmas moviescoming.

Over the past few years, Hallmark Original Christmas movies have become a crucial part of the season, even if it’s just for playing drinking games each time someone has a holiday-themed name. Hallmark has been pumping out so many Christmas movies, that they now spill into the summer months to keep the Christmas spirit alive year-round. Now, with an incredible 42(!) new movies scheduled for release this holiday season, it’s hard to choose which ones to prioritize.

To make your life easier, here are the 5 Hallmark Original Christmas movies that you definitely want to make sure you set your DVR for. Of course, if you’re part of the cord-cutters, Hallmark does have its own streaming service that the new releases will be available on as well, Hallmark Movies Now.

Round and Round

Yes, this list technically is focused on Christmas movies, since that’s what Hallmark has focused on in the past. Since 2019 however, the December line-up of films have included at least one Hanukkah film. Their first attempts at taking on the Jewish holiday were criticized for making the films themed around Christmas with the main conflict being how the main character is actually Jewish and doesn’t care about Christmas. But last year’s Hanukkah on Rye was decently received by the Jewish community, and it seems like Hallmark might have finally found its rhythm for expanding its holiday celebrations.

Round and Round focuses on Rachel (Vic Michaelis) who is stuck in a time loop that leaves her reliving her parents’ Hanukkah party. Unfortunately for Rachel, the key to freeing herself lies in Zach (Bryan Greenberg), the party guest Rachel’s grandmother is desperate to set her up with.

Round and Round premieres December 10 at 8 pm EST on Hallmark Channel.

Friends & Family Christmas

We’ve had Hallmark’s first gay couple, but it’s the ladies’ turn on December 17! Starring Humberly Gonzalez and Ali Liebert, Friends & Family Christmas focuses on Daniella (Gonzalez) & Amelia (Liebert) pretending to date for the sake of their overbearing parents. Of course, just like every version of this we’ve seen before, as the two get to see the real version of their fake partner, the lines between real and pretend blend together.

Just as important as having the first lesbian leading couple in a Hallmark Original Christmas movie is the fact both actresses identify as queer! Gonzales and Liebert have discussed at length what it means to be able to mark such a huge milestone for LGBTQ+ representation within the Hallmark catalog.

Friends & Family Christmas premieres on December 17 at 8 pm EST on Hallmark Channel.

My Norwegian Holiday

It’s always fun when different cultures are explored in the Hallmark Christmas movies, as it gives people a new perspective on what Christmas means around the world. My Norwegian Holiday focuses on Norway’s Christmas traditions and activities, but don’t worry, romance is still on the cards.

Starring Rhiannon Fish & David Elsendoorn, My Norwegian Holiday focuses on JJ (Fish) and her unexpected trip to Norway with mysterious stranger Henrik (Elsendoorn). As JJ tries to get through the first Christmas without her grandmother, Henrik comes into her life, and JJ discovers she has a troll figurine from Henrik’s hometown in Norway. Travelling with him for the holiday, just in time for his sister’s wedding the day before Christmas Eve, JJ not only solves the mystery of the troll, but finds out how to love the holiday again.

My Norwegian Holiday premieres December 1 at 8 pm EST on Hallmark Channel.

Christmas on Cherry Lane

It’s always fun when a Hallmark movie decides to focus on more than one couple throughout the film’s runtime. Creating a Love Actually-style story where everyone’s lives surprisingly intertwine is a lot of fun. Plus, Christmas on Cherry Lane features some of Hallmark’s top talent, including Jonathan Bennett, Catherine Bell, Erin Cahill, and James Denton.

Christmas on Cherry Lane focuses on three couples: One getting ready to welcome their first child (Cahill & John Brotherton), a pair who are empty nesters looking to move onto the next phase of their lives (Bell & Denton), and two who may be unexpectedly growing their family on Christmas Eve (Bennett & Vincent Rodriguez III), as they navigate the holiday.

Christmas on Cherry Lane premieres on December 9 at 8 pm EST on Hallmark Channel.

Miracle in Bethlehem, PA

Hallmark Original Christmas movies are fairly non-denominational, though of course Christmas itself is seen as a typically Christian holiday. But in 2022, their Christian greeting card imprint DaySpring decided to create a more religious Christmas film called The Gift of Hope, in hopes of appealing to a more traditional audience. DaySpring returns again with a new religious Christmas film, this time giving a unique take on the story of baby Jesus’ birth.

Miracle in Bethlehem, PA tells the story of new mom Mary Ann (Laura Vandervoort), who gets stranded in Bethlehem, PA with her new adopted daughter due to the weather. When the local inn is booked full for the night, the only place Mary Ann can stay is with the innkeeper’s brother, Joe (Benjamin Ayres). As the two try to make the best of the circumstances, they find that the other isn’t who they originally assumed them to be.

Miracle in Bethlehem, PA premieres on December 21 at 8 pm EST on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries.

Latest Marvel News: The Avengers’ future is confirmed to follow a $956 million controversy magnet as Iman Vellani admits the MCU’s biggest flaw

Latest Marvel News: The Avengers’ future is confirmed to follow a $956 million controversy magnet as Iman Vellani admits the MCU’s biggest flaw

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is practically Schrodinger’s Marvel movie at this point. It’s lost its director (Shang-Chi‘s Destin Daniel Cretton), its original writer (Quantumania‘s Jeff Loveness), and it could well ditch its titular character too. So does it still exist or doesn’t it?

Apparently, it does, according to the latest development on the Avengers 5 front, one which seems to be delivering exactly what the fandom have been wanting on one hand, and doing the exact opposite on the other.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is entrusted in the brains behind the Multiverse Saga’s most beloved and most divisive entries

This has been rumored for several weeks as it is, but Deadline has now confirmed that screenwriter Michael Waldron has been hired to pen The Kang Dynasty, in addition to his pre-existing commitment to script Avengers: Secret Wars. At first glance, you’d think this would be universally popular news — the showrunner of Loki season 1? Great! But Waldron is also responsible for writing the ever-divisive Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (even if it did earn almost $1 billion at the box office). Fans probably would’ve preferred Loki season 2 EP Eric Martin, but hey, there’s still time for even more twists and turns before this cat is let out of its box.

“I don’t know if it’s about just getting bigger and bigger and bigger”: Iman Vellani reveals expert opinion on how to fix the MCU

Ms. Marvel looks confused in a wooly hat after being told she's a mutant in Ms. Marvel's mid-credits scene.

How do you solve a problem like the MCU? There’s only one person we trust to find the answer. Kevin Feige? No, I’m talking about Iman Vellani, the future president of Marvel Studios herself (what? It could happen). The Kamala Khan actress has always been equal parts Marvel star and Marvel fan, so naturally her comments on what the studio needs to do to restore the franchise to its glory days are spot-on. “I don’t know if it’s about just getting bigger and bigger and bigger,” she said to TheDirect. “Because then, like, what’s left? You know, I think it’s just about making the audience care about their characters.” How about hiring Vellani to write The Kang Dynasty, huh, Kev?

Taika Waititi completes transformation into Marvel villain by admitting he had “no interest” in making Thor movies

At this juncture, I can only assume that, after the widely adored Thor: Ragnarok, Taika Waititi made a bet with someone to see if he could transform himself from Marvel poster boy to pariah. Following Thor: Love and Thunder receiving poor reactions last year, Waititi has now confessed he originally had “no interest” in making Marvel movies of any kind and only agreed to make his two Thor films because he was “poor.” Naturally, this hasn’t exactly endeared him to the fandom any. No wonder rumors are claiming Marvel is looking to go in a darker direction with Thor 5 and find a “more serious” director to helm it. Time to pay up, whoever made Waititi that wager.

10 Oscar-worthy performances that didn’t get a nomination

For many actors, an Academy Award win constitutes the apogee of their careers – but for every actor that takes home the famous statuette, there are countless more that, despite turning in once-in-a-lifetime performances, don’t even get a nomination. Here are ten unmissable performances that should have gotten more love at the Oscars.

10. Gene Wilder, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Timothée Chalomet’s soon-to-be-revealed portrayal may yet surprise us all, but until then, you have to go to the 1971 adaptation for the definitive Wonka, for which Wilder bagged a Golden Globe nomination, but no Oscar. Wilder is equal parts playfulness and sinisterness as the eccentric factory owner who takes the penniless Golden Ticket holder Charlie Bucket under his wing.

9. Michelle Yeoh, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Before Yeoh received a deserved Academy Award earlier this year for her work in Everything Everywhere All At Once, there was the small matter of her imperious performance in Ang Lee’s 2000 classic. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon walked off with four Academy Awards, but from the major award ceremonies, Yeoh received nothing but a BAFTA nomination for her work as Yu Shu Lien, whose work with Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun Fat) means their love for one another remains unrequited. The movie’s breathless fight scenes have yet to be bettered.

8. Jim Carrey, The Truman Show

Having come to prominence in Hollywood for his out-there comedy performances in movies such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) and Batman Forever (1995), by the late 1990s Carrey was looking for a chance to show his range. He got it in Peter Weir’s 1998 comedy drama The Truman Show, and while Carrey’s comedic chops get a chance to shine through, the really affecting scenes are his two-handers with his so-called wife and best friend, not to mention the extraordinary final scenes, in which Truman discovers that his entire life has been lived on a gigantic television set.

7. Jonathan Pryce, Regeneration

Before he came to wider attention in films such as Tomorrow Never Dies and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Pryce already had a great deal of A-lister work under his belt, including collaborations with Terry Gilliam on Brazil (1995) and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1998). But Pryce also acted in a number of high-quality low-budget dramas through the 1980s and 1990s. 1997’s Regeneration is the pick of the bunch: a tragic First World War drama about the famous war poets Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon. Pryce gives a pitch-perfect performance as the progressive-minded doctor who treats Owen and many other wounded soldiers for shellshock – and, in the process, begins to suffer from the same symptoms. An Academy Award nom finally came his way for his work opposite Anthony Hopkins in 2019’s The Two Popes.

6. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Red Dust

Years before his Academy Award nomination for 12 Years A Slave, Chiwetel Ejiofor’s quality was obvious. In 2004’s Red Dust, Ejiofor plays Alex, a South African politician who was tortured during the apartheid era. With able support from Hilary Swank and excellent direction from Tom Hooper in his feature film debut, Ejiofor delivers an unmissable performance that laid bare the terrible injustices of apartheid, and the power of forgiveness.

5. James Earl Jones, Field of Dreams

1989’s Field of Dreams is compelling from start to finish, but while Kevin Costner’s troubled relationship with his father forms the backbone of the plot, it is James Earl Jones’ magisterial performance as 1960s activist-turned-recluse Terrence Mann that is the undisputed highlight of the film. Jones nails each and every line reading, and his transformation from cynical ex-hippy to true believer in the transcendent power of the baseball diamond is an absolute joy to watch.

4. Andy Serkis, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

In Tolkien fandom, it’s taken for granted that Serkis was robbed of an Academy Award on a technicality. As everyone who has seen Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy knows, Andy Serkis’ face is never visible during his work as Gollum – clever CGI rendered the tortured creature’s features on screen – but Serkis’ inhabitation of the role via the then novel technology of motion capture is absolute.

3. James Dean, Rebel Without A Cause

Dean received Academy Award nominations for both East of Eden (1955) and Giant (1956), but his arguably finest role – as leather-clad teenage delinquent Jim Stark in 1955’s Rebel Without A Cause – was ignored by the Academy. Dean’s ease in front of the camera, and his insouciant line readings, still shine through almost 70 years later.

2. Bruno Ganz, Downfall

Swiss actor Bruno Ganz did a little work in Hollywood during his later years, including an impressive supporting role as a university professor in The Reader (2008), but it’s his mesmerizing work as Adolf Hitler in the Academy Award-nominated Downfall (2004) for which he is chiefly remembered in English-speaking countries. Ganz’ faultless performance encapsulated the mood swings and fragile grasp on reality that characterized the Nazi leader’s final days to perfection.

1. Björk, Dancer In The Dark

Only the Icelandic singer’s second foray into acting, Björk’s turn as the Czech immigrant Selma, whose encroaching blindness compromises her ability to care for her son, in 2000’s Dancer In The Dark is all the more remarkable for the fact it resulted from an exceptionally troubled working relationship with Danish auteur Lars von Trier. But her committed, naturalistic performance, which won the Best Actress award at Cannes, remains as utterly compelling now as it was then.
