U.S. Senators reportedly pressuring FTC to deliberate over Microsoft/Activision merger

Amid consolidation concerns, U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, Sheldon Whitehouse, and Bernie Sanders have sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission advising chairperson Lina Khanto to take a more thorough review of Microsoft’s proposed plan to acquire Activision Blizzard and its back catalog in a staggering $68.7 billion deal.

Unlike previous general naysaying amongst various commentators, most of which framed the proposed acquisition as encouraging a general trend towards monopolization, these recently-expressed concerns have to do with Activision’s current sexual harassment lawsuits.

ESA cancels plans for digital-only E3 2022

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) told its partners today that it will not go ahead with plans to host its annual Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, this year. 

The ESA originally planned to hold this year’s event in a digital-only format amid ongoing surges of COVID-19, but has seemingly reversed course. E3 has only been canceled once before in its 26-year history, following the immediate onset of the pandemic in 2020. The ESA returned in 2021 with a virtual event, though it originally anticipated a return to an in-person show this year.

All cast and characters confirmed for DC’s ‘Blue Beetle’ movie

While DC fans might be focusing on the movies we’ve got coming up this year like Black Adam and Batgirl, one really exciting project that’s almost flying under the radar is the upcoming Blue Beetle film. Featuring comic book fan-favorite Jaime Reyes, this will be the first DCEU outing to feature a Latino superhero, which is cause enough for celebration on its own.

But whatever the production team has got planned clearly impressed Warner Bros. as, though it was originally set to be a HBO Max exclusive, Blue Beetle has been bumped up to a theatrical release, heading to the big screen in 2023. Morbius has officially flown into cinemas, and unless you’ve been lucky enough to have access to a preview screening, now will be your first opportunity to enjoy the film in its entirety. Star Wars Legends and the official Canon have been at odds ever since Disney purchased Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion (that isn’t a typo) back in 2014. Since then, the argument over Legends has become about as complicated as trying to destroy a Death Star without a targeting computer. Let’s leave the heroics to the Jedi. 

So what’s the short answer? It doesn’t exist. Although Star Wars Legends is an integral part of the larger mythos of Star Wars and all that exists throughout the galaxy, no, Star Wars Legends is not canon, but undoubtedly influences the official canon set forth by Disney and Lucasfilm.

Leaked ‘Morbius’ post-credit scene explained

Two mysterious post-credit scenes have been leaked from the ending of Daniel Espinosa’s new film, Morbius. Those who have had the pleasure of partaking in early screeners of the highly anticipated latest Marvel installment, hoping for Easter eggs, got much more. According to ScreenGeek, the two scenes “are essentially set-ups for future movies in which Vulture and Morbius are working together.”

“The first post-credits scene features Adrian telling Morbius about how he ended up in prison because of Spider-Man. This now indicates that Spider-Man will likely be appearing at some point in the future.”

Apple’s CODA got overshadowed at the 94th Academy Awards Sunday by Will Smith’s “slap seen ‘round the world,”but managed to walk away with historic wins for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor, and Troy Kotsur is up for more.

Matt Smith already misses one of his cut scenes from ‘Morbius’

Jared Leto’s Morbius may end up being a morbid joke when it releases Friday, but the Spider-Man-adjacent work has left costar Matt Smith already pining for one of his scenes that didn’t survive the final cut of the series.

“There were way more scenes in it that really supported [my villain’s inception]. There was a whole sequence with the girl in the bar where Milo met her a scene before and then they went back and he fell for her and then she really hurt him, and then he went on this big killing spree. I sort of miss that part of the story, actually, now because that didn’t make the film and it gave it a bit of context to see him do that.”

‘Moon Knight’ producer hopes Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man 4’ gets made

Grant Curtis, a producer of Marvel’s Moon Knight and all three of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films, hopes a Tobey Maguire-starring Spider-Man 4 will one day see the light of day.

Raimi had been in the works with Sony to make a follow-up movie to Spider-Man 3, and a tentative release date for May 6, 2011, was even announced, but the movie never came to be due to the Drag Me to Hell director being unhappy with the script he was mocking up and deciding to abandon the project.

Black Twitch streamers renew push for protections, cooperation with Twitch following rampant harassment

Black creators behind the viral #TwitchDoBetter campaign and racial justice organization Color of Change have published an open letter to Twitch CEO Emmett Shear demanding the live stream service work with Black creators to protect their community from unfettered harassment on the platform. 

The letter deems the Amazon-owned company’s Black History Month initiatives “sorely inadequate” following Twitch’s inaction on the issue. The move follows last year’s #ADayOffTwitch protests against insufficient protections for marginalized creators against hate raids and other forms of harassment on the platform, which prompted an acknowledgment of issues that have only been partly addressed.
