Peter Dinklage To Star In Toxic Avenger Reboot

Legendary Entertainment acquired the rights to The Toxic Avenger a few years back, with plans for a reboot of the horror-comedy property having been on the cards for a while now. Unfortunately, however, movement on the project has been slow.

It snagged a director last year, though, in the form of Macon Blair, while we also know that it’ll be produced by Troma Entertainment founders Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, with Legendary’s Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter on board as well to help bring the project out of development hell and into theaters. And now, the film has finally found its star.

According to Deadline, Game of Thrones‘ Peter Dinklage will headline the reboot, which is being described as “a contemporary reimagining of Troma Entertainment’s successful 1984 low-budget action comedy hit.” He’s the first and only cast member to board the movie, but with an actor of his caliber now involved, you can bet that things will begin to pick up steam.

The Toxic Avenger

Though far from what you’d call a big hit back in the day, the original Toxic Avenger has a strong cult following and inspired three follow-ups, a television cartoon, and even both a Marvel comic and a stage musical. Thanks to a campy tone, ridiculous effects and loads of violence, it had a cheap, B-movie vibe to it that endeared it to many. And it’ll certainly be interesting to see what direction they head in with the reboot.

With Kaufman and Herz involved, hopefully the project will keep at least some of the silly, anarchic spirit of the original. Though seeing that Deadline notes it’s a reimagining, you can also expect it to be given a fresh coat of paint for modern times.

The Internet Remembers Paul Walker On 7th Anniversary Of His Death

Paul Walker’s tragic death in 2013 left the world in shock, with the actor being taken from us far too soon. And today, on the 7th anniversary of his passing, the internet is remembering the performer and all the good memories he brought us.

Obviously, Walker will always be most closely associated with the mega successful Fast & Furious franchise, but with over 40 credits to his name according to IMDb, it’s clear that he led a very diverse career that spanned numerous projects and genres, all of which led to him becoming one of Hollywood’s most enjoyable and dependable action stars.

Circling back to the anniversary of his death, though, and below you can find a sample of what folks are saying over on Twitter to mark the occasion:

Of course, while Walker is no longer with us, he’s certainly not been forgotten about – as you can see up above – and we may even get to witness his return to the big screen again. He was already brought back in Furious 7 using existing footage mixed with visual effects and the help of his brothers as body doubles, and there’ve been rumors that he’ll be showing up in F9 as well in some capacity.

With the film not due out until May 28th, 2021, it’ll probably be a while yet before we find out for sure if he’s going to return once more, but even if he doesn’t, you can be sure that the ninth installment in the mega successful franchise will still acknowledge Paul Walker in some way. After all, his shadow looms large over the beloved Fast and Furious series and his absence is certainly felt.

Netflix Is Adding 2 Tom Hanks Movies Tomorrow

Though religiously controversial at the time of release, there are few novels that gained as much popularity in the 2000s as Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code. So, it was a no-brainer for Hollywood to hop on the train and make an adaptation, and that’s exactly what happened in 2006 when director Ron Howard teamed up with actor Tom Hanks for the film version, which went on to become one of the highest grossing movies of the year, though it didn’t fare quite as well with critics.

The Da Vinci Code tells the story of Harvard professor Robert Langdon (Hanks) who, after being framed for the murder of Louvre curator Jacques Saunière, must unravel a mystery involving Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous painting The Last Supper. And though it’s not the best movie he’s ever made, it’s worth a watch for Hanks’ performance and the fantastic lineup of actors that include such big names as Ian McKellen, Alfred Molina, Paul Bettany and Audrey Justine Tautou.

If you’ve never seen the film, it’s available to stream on Netflix starting from tomorrow. And even better, it’ll be joined by the follow-up movie Angels & Demons, which catches back up with Langdon for another exciting adventure.

Angels & Demons

There’s one tidbit of information you should know going into the two flicks, though, and that’s that strangely, while Brown’s novel version of Angels & Demons is actually set before the events of The Da Vinci Code, Howard chose to treat the film version as a sequel. So, while it may seem weird if you’re a fan of the books, you should absolutely watch The Da Vinci Code first, as Angels & Demons serves as Langdon’s second quest in the movie timeline.

If neither Tom Hanks effort is tickling your fancy, though, that’s not a problem, as Netflix has no shortage of incredible films and shows launching over the coming weeks and you can head through here to see the rest of December’s offerings.

A Forgotten Amber Heard Movie Hits Netflix Tomorrow

December is set to be an exciting month for Netflix subscribers and the first day alone will bring with it a large selection of movies and shows to add to your ever-growing list of content to watch. For instance, there’s Tom Hanks’ The Da Vinci Code and its sequel Angels & Demons, all 10 seasons of the beloved sci-fi series Stargate SG-1, and popular Adam Sandler flicks 50 First Dates and Little Nicky, among many others.

But it’s not only the big name titles that’ll be vying for your attention, as Netflix is also adding a number of overlooked flicks that are hoping to get a second life on the service and one such film that you may want to keep an eye on if you’re in the mood for an action thriller with some solid talent in it is 3 Days to Kill.

The movie stars Kevin Costner as Ethan Renner, a terminally ill spy who gives up his life of deception to spend his final days with his family. But when an elite CIA assassin named Vivi Delay – played by Amber Heard – offers him the option to complete one final mission in exchange for a drug that could save him, he sees an opportunity to rebuild his relationships and get a true second chance.

3 Days to Kill

The film received mixed reviews from critics and currently sits at a weak 28% on Rotten Tomatoes, but praise was given to its well designed action sequences, with many reviewers noting that its weakest elements involve underdeveloped family drama that undermines the movie’s overarching plot. Still, if you’re just looking for some harmless action, there’s much worse out there.

A lot of people may find the inclusion of Amber Heard a deterrent, however, given her ongoing struggle to prove that she wasn’t abusive to former partner Johnny Depp. A petition to remove her from Aquaman 2 has far exceeded 1.5 million signatures, and the actress is facing an uphill battle to remain relevant and respected in the industry as evidence mounts against her. That being said, it hasn’t been all wins for Depp, either, and plenty more revelations on both sides are sure to arise as the court cases continue to play out.

WB Games Montréal might be retaining some DNA that made Rocksteady’s Arkham trilogy such a delight to experience, but make no mistake – Gotham Knights is a very different interpretation of DC’s iconic franchise. For starters, Bruce Wayne and, by extension, Batman, is nowhere to be seen in this particular tale, having supposedly died previously due to unknown causes.

The responsibility for protecting Gotham’s population from crime, then, is left to four of the Dark Knight’s talented entourage: Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing and Red Hood. The quartet, while all sharing the same goal of protecting innocent lives, do so in very different ways. Fans who have already witnessed WB Games’ initial reveal trailer during DC FanDome back in the summer will be acutely aware of how each vigilante differs from the other in combat, of course, but there is one shared ability that each team member will need to utilize in order to find the most notorious members of Batman’s rogues gallery.

Arguably even more than his limitless wealth and cutting edge gadgets, Wayne’s mastery over the art of detective work has rubbed off on his former students and will be a key gameplay feature regardless of which character you happen to be currently playing as.

According to Gotham Knights creative director Patrick Redding, so-called Villain Crimes – set piece missions which take place over several nights – will require the player to do “a certain amount of legwork and detective work” in order to “hunt down the villain at the next major confrontation.” What this will entail exactly, we’re not sure, as Redding doesn’t go into any greater detail, though one can likely expect objectives to change wildly, depending on whom (or what) it is that’s being tracked.

Sounds like an interesting – and loyal to the source material – gameplay loop, then, and we can’t wait to see how the system evolves in complexity when Gotham Knights launches next year for PlayStation and Xbox consoles, as well as PC.

A Serbian Film Getting Uncut 4K HD Blu-Ray Release This January

Generally regarded as one of the more controversial exploitation pictures of all time, 2010’s A Serbian Film has been the subject of multiple bans and debates over its extensive violence and sexual material. Although it may not quite live up to the hype, it’s definitely a unique watch and is now getting an uncut 4K HD, feature-packed Blu-ray and DVD release this January from Unearthed Films.

For those not aware, the movie is the work of Srđan Spasojević, and deals with a semi-retired porn star who agrees to take part in an independent production that quickly spirals out of control. It’s sufficient to say that the filmmakers don’t hold back in packing the title with numerous unpleasant acts, many of which are difficult to read about, let alone actually see on screen.

From its initial festival and theatrical run, A Serbian Film was subject to significant cuts in order to reach audiences, and was often shown in private viewings to avoid licensing issues. Indeed, many countries chose to ban the production altogether, which only added to its infamy. Critics have also mostly come down on the side of dismissing any deeper merits that Spasojević and co-writer Aleksandar Radivojević may have claimed, including various political themes.

In terms of home availability, we received an edited version on VOD back in 2011, and a limited edition uncut copy on DVD in 2012. The new version of A Serbian Film, though, offers another chance to watch an uncensored edit and this time in 4K HD, which will presumably make the graphic scenes even more disturbing. There’ll also be bonus features including commentaries, interviews, documentaries, and other behind-the-scenes looks at pic, with the full list of extras reading as so:

Even before the recent speculation claiming it would be similar to an Avengers movie in terms of sheer scope and scale, Thor: Love and Thunder was already shaping up to be one of the biggest Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbusters on the horizon. After all, Chris Hemsworth’s Odinson will become the first of the franchise’s marquee heroes to headline a fourth solo adventure, while director Taika Waititi has promised something twice as crazy as Ragnarok.

The cast is also looking stacked, with Chris Pratt’s addition to the official roster appearing to confirm that the Guardians of the Galaxy will be dropping by for much more than a fan-baiting cameo. Then there’s Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, who will be guaranteed a substantial arc since she’s looking for a queen to help her rule Asgard, and that’s without even mentioning the tantalizing prospect of Christian Bale on villainous duties or Natalie Portman returning to the fold to wield Mjolnir as Jane Foster.

On top of all that, a character thought to have made their last appearance in the MCU could also be on the way back, after Waititi was recently seen buddying up with Idris Elba to take in some rugby over the weekend. Of course, it might just be something as simple as two friends hanging out and catching the big game together, but the Tri Nations Series is being held in Australia, where Thor: Love and Thunder starts production in a matter of weeks, so it’s not hard to connect the dots.

Obviously, Elba’s Heimdall was killed off in the opening scene of Avengers: Infinity War, but this is a comic book movie we’re talking about and the keeper of the Bifrost’s powers were always fairly vaguely defined during his time in the MCU anyway. As such, nothing can be definitively ruled out just yet.

Star Wars’ David Prowse Reportedly Died From COVID-19

The death of David Prowse, who played Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy, has led to a number of tributes to the English actor and his contribution to the franchise. Prowse passed away yesterday at the age of 85 after a short illness, and it has now been revealed via family that COVID-19 was one of the complicating factors. Given the impact that the virus has had on the elderly across the UK, Prowse is sadly just one of many whose health was severely affected this year.

Speaking to UK newspapers, Prowse’s daughter Rachel explained that he had been hospitalized for the past two weeks, meaning they were unable to visit and say their goodbyes. The former bodybuilder and actor was also suffering from Alzheimer’s, making it even more tragic that COVID restrictions prevented family visits, and there will need to be a delay before arranging a large memorial service. However, Rachel Prowse did note the impact her father had on his carers:

“It’s horrible that Covid restrictions meant we did not get to see him and say goodbye. But when we went to collect his stuff from the hospital the nurse said what a cool guy he was. He was such a larger-than-life character. He would have loved to see himself trending on Twitter.”

Prowse was born in Bristol in 1935, and at 6 foot 6 inches tall represented an imposing figure who’d later add power to Darth Vader’s physique. As a bodybuilder, he became the British heavyweight weightlifting champion for the first time in 1962, before going on to play extensive supporting roles in British film and television. In addition, he was well-known as the Green Cross Code Man, a superhero created to promote road safety.

Cast as the body of Darth Vader in Star Wars, with James Earl Jones providing the voice, Prowse made much of the performance throughout his career, despite a strained relationship with Lucasfilm in his later years. Still, George Lucas and Mark Hamill have been among those paying tribute to David Prowse’s part in bringing the first incarnation of Darth Vader to life in Star Wars and its two initial sequels. Meanwhile, Prowse’s passing comes at a time when COVID-19 continues to disrupt the entertainment industry, with more delays and closures likely to emerge before the end of 2020.
